I have a 93 sport and was wondering if anyone else has this problem. Usually in parking lots where there are a couple of tight turns I will lose all power steering for a couple of seconds. I try to keep turning and then it kicks back in. The pump is full of fluid. Does it sound like a bad pump? I need to resolve this as soon as possible as I have narrowly avoided a couple of accidents since it started doing this. Thanks!

I had this problem with my truck for about 3 weeks. I needed a rack and pinion. Is the wheel harder to turn than it used to be? Mine just progressively got tighter. I kinda liked it since the steering normally takes near zero effort. Look at the tie rod ends to see if they are wet. When the rack goes bad it pumps out fluid.

Normally the steering takes no effort. It just usually happens when I have some tight turning...the only time I really need it! I have suspected that my rack and pinion needs replacement. I have high mileage and there seems to be some play in the steering. Thanks for the reply, any one else have any ideas?

Its not that rack & pinnion, your '93 dosent have one. It sounds to me like you have something binding. This could be anything fron a tie rod end to the steering box. The only to know for sure is to test each part of the steering, starting with the cheapest (tie rod ends), until you can ID the bad part.
