Steering shakes??

Yesterday I had to use the 4X4 on my 98 XLT 4.0L, I was in 4W H. and the steering wheel started shaking like the pump or something was having a seziure. It was not making a noise just back and forth. It seemed to do it when I turned the wheel. I checked the fluid and its good, no whinning or popping sounds. Belt is in place in fact I just changed it. It has got 130,000 miles on it. Any suggestions??? Thanks Wyatte

Probably a dumb question, but were you on dry pavement with the 4x4 on?

No, I was on a muddy rutted out rd. on the edge of a farm field going to put deer feed in my automatic feeders and change batteries in the cameras.
