i have factory nerf bars which are starting to bubble with rust at some spots. Most of it is consentrated next to the plastic grip pad on top, or around the plastic 90 degree angle tubing at the ends. its not noticable now, but i've seen how fast these things rust when it starts, so i decided to get rid of it with my dremell. what color spay paint is an exact match for that gray-silver ford uses for the trim. i tried running down the code in my door and it only said "vermillion clearcoat" which is the body color. i looked at paintscratch.com and their list for explorers didn't help much. anyone got any ideas?

youre not going to find that color code anywhere; its an accent color. when i had my safari bar on my truck, i took it to a local body shop, and me and the painter sat outside with paint chips until we found one that matched, and they mixed some up for me. thats probably the route youre going to have to go. the shop only ended up charging me $50 (cash only, for obvious reasons) to shoot it with a paint gun, since it was off my truck. i cant imagine a shop charging much more than that to shoot 2 nerf bars if you take them off the truck and prep em (remove the plastic step on top and stuff.)

Hey I have my factory nerfs for sale cheap. Let me know if you're interested.

Seems to me that you found the color already. Vermillion should be the gray color and Clearcoat means its a "basecoat clearcoat" application. It basicly means they spray on the Vermillion color and then cover it with clearcoat. Find a paint store or body shop that has the 1998 domestic car paint book with chips and find Ford colors. There should be paint chips in it, find the one that says Vermillion, it will be under clearcoat and possible metallic. That is if is a metallic paint and i think it is if my memory severs me right. This will give you the code and then they can match it exactly. Get it done professionally if you can afford it. It will turn out really nice then.
FYI. tbomb, if they just brought out chips then that was because they may not have had the correct book for your rig, this is not uncommon since the books are quite pricy.

vermillion is the red paint. I need the gray trim paint. as far as base paint, i think that those spays at paint-scratch.com are both the color and matching clear.

Also, while we are on the same toppic... If i do need a top clear coat, what one matches the shine of ford's factory paint? I want a perfect match! I'm guessing its simaler to the spray on gloss coat used in models?

Ooops, my bad on the Vermillion. As far as top coats or clear coats whatever you want to call them, they are mostly the same, if your paint has a high gloss then you just need to get high gloss. Sounds like you are going to do it yourself so the most important thing is that you get it on evenly and without running it.
