I am trying to install a stereo in my 1996 explorer sport and I cant get the speakers to work. I am using a wire harness to connect the stock wires to the new stereo. I connected all the wires correctly and I cant seem to get the speakers to work. I know someone here that has had the same problem, but i do not understand how he solved the problem. Does anyone have an idea of how to get the speakers to work?

The other guy did not connect the remote turn-on to the factory amp (at least that's what it sounded like from his description). Once he connected it, things worked fine.

The best thing is to bypass the factory amp. I am not sure where it is located on a '96. I think someone said that it is behind the cargo pocket panel in the rear of the vehicle.

connect the blue (blue/white if so equipped) wire of the aftermarket deck to the blue/white wire of the ford gray plug. this will turn on the factory amp. on the 95 and up models, you don't have to bypass he amp or use an amp integrator. the factory amp uses a high level (speaker level) input. and for future reference, the factory amp on 95-01 explorers is behind the panel on the passenger side C-pillar. basically just below the rear passenger side seat belt upper bolt.

I still might bypass the factory amp depending on what head unit you bought. If it is a decent unit, chances are that the amp in the head unit will have better sound quality than the factory amp. Doing so made a huge difference in my Exp. and a Mercedes, both with higher end Eclipse HUs.
Again it depends on the realative quality of the equipment in question and how much trouble you want to go through to get it to work.
