stick-on wheel weights just made my "hate list"

The number and placement depends on the wheel/tire in question; all are different.

Some os the stick on's look like this:

An old drag racing trick is to duct tape them on. That's how my beadlocks are setup.

LOL Sara you act like it's gonna be some huge expense, they're just little pieces of metal!!!

alright, with the design of my rims, i cant use clamp on weights, they have to be stick ons, and i just noticed that theyre already flying off and i just had them rebalanced about 6 weeks ago; wtf? i knew before i got the rims how the weights had to be, and i knew the stick ons were terrible, but this is ridiculous - its been 6 weeks and im losing them already, and since im at school, my truck just sits, i barely drive it up here.

conclusion: stick on wheel weights are the epitome of crap.

anyone know something that i dont about how to make em not fly off or something?

thanks.
I always request these weights..keeps the rims nicer. Duct Tape works wonders..just put 2 strips of duct tape over the weights in a X pattern. I've done off roading, water, snow, etc all of them are still there!

Just take a zip screw and......

Is there no bead on the inside of your (way cool looking) rims to clamp regular weights to?? If they are on the inside, no issue with scratches & you can't see the weights thru the spokes.

You must not give up - YOU are probably the only person that will understand when I launch my Cobra R's for something else!!!!!!

nope, on the inside theres nothing to clamp the other style weights onto.

frankrizzo, what do you plan on getting when you chuck the cobra r's? ;) and how come youre getting rid of em?

and thanks everyone for the input, im definitely gonna do the duct tape thing.

sarah, ya know when you go get your wheels balanced?...it costs like $10 per wheel. its no big deal, im just annoyed that i have to go back to the shop to have it done, i really dont care too much about the $10. the way they balance wheels is they take em off the truck, put em on a wheel balancer and it spins the wheel and tells the guy where there needs to be a weight attached, so the wheels spins smoothly. if you go out and look at your stock wheels, im sure theres weights on em, probably on the outside; look around the edges - those are the clamp on style. with most cool wheels, you cant use those (some you can, but you should only put em on the inside so you cant see em.)

Hey tbomb

Is it a possibility that there was a wieght there but was in the wrong spot so it was removed and a new on was put on else where? I worked in a tire shop for a year and a half and let me say that balancing with stick on wieghts is an art form. If the guy balancing the rim and tire stuck the wieght on and respun it, the wieght may have made the balance worse so it was removed and but else where or not put back on because it really wasnt required. The guy may have bein in too much of a hurry to clean off the old tape. I have personnally never seen the wieghts fall off except in extreme situations.

If tape residue is still on the wheels I would say it was ment to be pulled off..if it simply fell off I doubt any residue would be left.

not possible because on the one wheel, theres no weights at all on there. its not like he moved the weight and left the tape stuck on.

its weird that nobody has heard of this before - i thought this was common knowledge that stick on weights fall off all the time. ive had numerous mechanics tell me this, ive experienced it, as well a bunch of my friends who build street machines told me too.

I was warned at the tire place that they would fall off but I didn't care. just put duct tape on the next day.

I could ask you the same thing (why did you get rid?).
Basically the 3/16 spacer + 17x9 size means they stick out a couple of inches past the front fenders. This means they it looks bogus and sprays debris all down the side of the vehicle.

I'm actually just starting to look around.....Were your rims 18 x 8 or 18 x 7?
Do they stick out at all?

i used to work at americas tire company... those stick on weights do fine IF they are put on properly.... the rim surface must be void of all grease and brake dust or they wont stick....race cars use the sickons... then they put duct tape over them... i have a;lso seen clamp on weights fall off on the road too...... wheel balance with wieght is not a perfected science, and never will be until we get to jetson cars ;)

i figured since earlier you mentioned that id probably be the only one to understand why youre getting rid of your cobra r's, that you read some of my threads about it...guess not ;) i had some issues with the 1" spacers.

anyway, when you ask about my rims being 18x7 or 18x8, do you mean my new ones? theyre 17x8, and on my truck they do not stick out. they come right to the edge of the fender flare, but on your truck, i think theyll stick out (they have a 0 offset.)

and, what size tires are you running? most guys with cobra r's arent running anything bigger than a 275 55 r17 and arent using spacers, so they dont stick out at all (some guys claim they get some minimal rubbage on full wheel turn, but personally, i like the cobra r's so much, i would have just dealt with it, if that were my problem. oh well, my new rims kick ass anyway :D ) my tires were big, so i had to run spacers.

I have a set of 17" x 8" rims wrapped with 275/55r17 tires and they have rubbed just a little bit whenever the wheel is turned absolutly all the way. Also, i have the stickons and i got stuck in the mud out in Elgin, Tx which is outside of Austin and i though i lost a weight because whenever i got up to aroun d70mps when i got out the truck started shakin like crazy, it turned out that i didn't love a weight, i just had a couple pebbles wedged in the back right wheel that threw off the whole balance...i washed it off and it was fine...

I'm running 275/55's. With the Saleen swaybar in front, they don't rub at all - it offsets in more than the stock. I thought for some reason that your rimz were 18's, they still look great though...

Clue me in....why would you use 1" spacers?? 3/16 clears everything, and you could really get away with no spacers if you were carefull at max. crankage of the wheel...

i had 1" spacers because my tires were 285 60 r17 :D you know what willy chu's truck looks like? www.willychu.com - my truck looked just like that but white (i think i still have some pics of of the cobra r's on my truck on my page - check em out if you want.)

I know this thread's as old as dirt, but I just wanted to say thanks for the info-I had NO idea about stick on weights, and yes, I have had nearly ALL of the outside weights fly off of my stock rims...dunno why, but there's only two left. The truck still rides fine, however-it must be used to my lead foot now or something ;) The little buggers scratched the edges of the rims, too :fire: so no more outside weights for me. Does anybody know where to get high quality stick ons for relatively cheap? And I should put duct tape over them after they get stuck on, right? Thanks!

they will stick fine AS LONG AS the wheel is cleaned in the spot were the weight will go with alcohol/brake cleaner or whatnot. and yes, the duct-tape trick works well. i have had many sets of wheels over the years with stick-on weights and with the duct-tape they NEVER have come off.

tbomb, I can sympathize. When I got my new wheels (the black d-spoked rims) the shop i took it to (big o) used the stick-on's. By the time I got it home all but one set of weights had been flung out or dropped out at some point as they were no longer weighted.
