When first driving the car, the accelerator works smoothly; upon driving a bit and then stopping e.g. at a stoplight, the accelerator then sticks - you need to press the gas and then it gives causing you to lurch forward. Someone told me it was due to the AWD clutches? It is a 1998 Mountaineer with 56000 miles. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome.

I dont understand? the pedal itself is sticking? Or the truckl wont move until you give it more gas?

Or the gas pedal wont depress until you push harder then you need to?

In any case you need to do a visual inspection of the pedal itself and the cable.
Then the cable under the hood and the linkage where it attaches to the throttle body.

it could be something under the dash hanging down into the top of the cable.
It could be the cable itself is bad (look for rubbing on the outer rubber coating/casing)
it could be something in the throttle body linkage.

only way to find out is to get uder th edash with a flashlight and look, then look under the hood.

I had this on my 4.0 2000

The plate in the throttle body gets a groove worn in it that catches when it opens. It causes the first part of the gas pedal stroke to be sticky. If you take the boot off the throttle body you can work the plate back and forth to see where it sticks (obvious). The dealer wanted to replace the whole T. Body! No way. I took a fine pc of sandpaper and sanded down the little lip and have been for quite awhile. Good to buy some Tbody cleaner while your in there as well.
Good luck

One possibility is carbon on the edge of the throttle plate. Clean it and see if the problem goes away.

Cleaning Throttle Body

What do I need to do to get into the TB? Do I just take the air cleaner connection off or do I need to actually pull the TB off? Is there a liquid cleaner I can use first before doing anything drastic. Thanks.
