well. my truck has has a starting problem for a while now, it cranks for like 5 seconds then fires or stumbles, but it runs good once started... this is what i have replaced. fuel economy is also at like 14MPG city and 20 Hwy

Fuel pump
Fuel filter
fuel pump relay
crankshaft sensor
plugs
wires
starter
coil pack
main battery

i don't know what else it could be? I'm also starting to notice the SOHC death rattle at 2500Rpm... would a timing chain that is starting to fail cause a hard start? maybe i should replace the starter relay too. it starts INSTANTLY sometimes and others it takes forever. blah..

Oh, you've still got a ways to go before you've replaced everything, there's still a lot more fun to be had, - the list is long but my '97 SOHC liked having the timing tensioners and intake gaskets replaced[00M12 kit]. If your's never got one, it probably needs one. The rear tensioner doesn't come in the kit so order that one at the same time to save on shipping. It's the easiest part of all to replace. See 2000StreetRod's - My Helpful Threads for some good info and pics.

yes Ive cleaned both, even replaced with ones from a vehicle that ran/started normally :(

i will check the TPS tomorrow, thanks

ok well i changed the TPS with one from my other ex because i couldn't find my voltmeter. no difference.

i have noticed that if i pump the gas quickly when i try to start it, it fires much quicker. maybe fuel pressure regulator?

Check your fuel pressure

If the throttle plate is opened when the engine is running the PCM assumes an increasing load and richens the mixture. I don't know if the process is active when the starter is cranking.

If the throttle is at WOT when the starter is cranked the PCM assumes the engine is flooded and I believe disables the fuel injectors.

I suggest that you check your fuel pressure. Did you check it before and after replacing your fuel pump?

i checked it before and it was under the minimum, i also changed the filter again.

although i didn't check it after, ill have to get the tester again from my friend and do it

Tested the pressure and it goes up to the proper spec at first turn of the key, but then drops down to well below within a few seconds.

I would like to do the fuel pressure regulator and intake gaskets, but the stock one seems to be one piece with the braided steel lines and the replacement ones seem to have a fitting on the end. I have a one piece design from a 98, and one from a 95 (that seems to have a disconnect just before the FPR.

also another thing I can't believe I somehow forgot to add....

when i replaced the fuel filter, i noticed it had a big rattle... im thinking the filter failed internally and wasn't doing its job and letting silt get through.

opinions?

any help would be appreciated
