: ...If you buy a new or used shift motor I guess you will need to cut that small wire and splice the new one on in order to replace your old one.
Actually you don't need to cut the wire. The shift motor connector can be disassembled so you can remove any the wires without the need to cut them. You need a pic, small screwdriver or other such tool to remove the inner red lock ring inside the connector. Once removed you can free the wire from the connector.

Test the controller in the rear quarter panel. Procedure should be at the Explorer Maintenance site - the link is in DeRocha's signature

The power steering pump is easy to replace. Mine started leaking at the shaft bearing, leaving puddles on the ground. One caution: The pulley must be pulled off in order to remove the pump from its mounting bracket. You need the special pulley tools. I got my replacement pump at Autozone and borrowed the tool kit from them. Use the puller and 2 wrenches with lots of torque to get the pulley off. Remove the old pump, no need to remove the pump mounting bracket. Bolt in the new pump and press on the original pulley with the special tool, which is really a hardened steel bolt and washer. It takes a lot of force to press the pulley onto the shaft. Don't hammer it or use an impact wrench or you will damage the pump.

Let me know what you do about the rear wiper. Mine works but makes a noise like skriiiiiiitch on the backstroke! Haven't bee ambitious enough to take apart the lift gate to get at the motor. I'd liek to put in a long delay circuit like they have in the newer Explorers.

Power steering Pump

Hi Bob. Thanks for the info, Question did you pull your power steering pump from below or pulled the AC unit off. :us: I heard you can pull it off from below. That is a good idea on the delay for the wiper motor I might look into that. I need to tare into that and see whats causing it to not reset itself into the holder. It will work but than it will sit and vibrate on the glass and Drive me Crazy. As soon as I get to it I will post what I found.

Tazzout:

I didn't have to touch the A/C compressor at all. My truck is a 92, so your may be different.

I removed the belt from the pump pulley, then used the special tool to pull the pulley off. This exposes the bolts that hold the pump to its mounting bracket. Disconnect the hoses, unbolt the pump and remove it from the bracket. Bolt in the new pump, connect the hoses., press the pulley on with another tool. Put the belt on. Fill the reservoir and bleed the system, per the instructions.

If it wasn't answered, yes, I think it's safe to drive without the shift motor for a day or two.

If you're not into fixing the shift motor, it's over $300 from Ford. It was an in stock part :)

I personally like auto hubs and they do the job well. Do try cleaning them out first before going ahead and replacing them. If that doesn't work, then have them rebuilt here.

But yeah if you plan on off roading more than a little, just go ahead and do the manual hub conversion.
