They are about the same assuming the engines are about the same (4.0L). This is because the body didnt really change much. The chassis changed a litlte but nothing really significant.
They are the same in appearance height and weight. The 1st gen. is more likely to roll over.
The actual handling characteristics and safety are far different. The 95+ trucks are better handling, they have better anti-roll bars. They can be made to handle better than the older trucks. That's a realistic comparison. So what exactly are you after?
