Have a stock 92 XLT m/t w/92.5k miles. Alignment is off (camber - outside of tire wearing, both sides). Have gone to two shops, and gotten two different opinions for fixes. Wanted to ask some of the experts (you guys) for an opinion on the best solution. Both shops said the alignment would require some fix beyond the basic alignment adjustments.

One shop said that the coil springs were nearing the end of life. They suggested replacing them, and then (obviously) checking the alignment, and adjusting. Around $270 for the springs, and $80 for the alignment.

The other shop strongly suggested just installing cams to adjust the camber. They felt that the coil springs shouldn't be bad after only 92k miles, and that was overkill to replace them. This job was $100 for the cams and $50 for the alignment.

Since the difference between the two was around $200, I wanted to get some other opinions for folks who have (or haven't) been here.

Thanks for any insight you can offer!
Joe

The second shop is correct about the springs. Besides, sagged coil springs will cause inside tire wear, not outside! I'd go with the second shop as they sound like they are a lot more honest than the first.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I actually prefer the second folks, as they were nicer people to work with.

My bad on the description. I guess I messed up what the problem was with the tires (my only excuse, it isn't my daily driver, but my wife's car). She soundly boxed me on my ears when we read your reply. Apparantly, it was the inside of the tires that was wearing.

Having said that, does that make any difference in your diagnosis? Would 92k still be too soon for problems with the springs?

Thanks again!
Joe

i agree with the second shop to i just got out of a alignment class at nashville auto diesel college and you just need new cams put in like he said the springs are not bad they make a camber kit for those that change camber up to 3.75 degrees i need them for mine to if you want to do it cheaper go to a auto parts store get the cams and put them in yourself its nt hard just take out the nut on top of your upper ball joint pry out the cam and put in the new one you can eye ball it until you get it to the shop then they will only charge you to turn the nut just into alignment

xplorer101: hey I was just wondering how you like nashville diesel? I'm going to northwestern in ohio, and just wondering how nashville is.

the alignment bushings should not cost more than $60 for the pair... and alignment is normally around $50-80.... but be forewarned, at work, we charge extra to align lifted or lowered vehicles....
