Hi I have a stock '95 Ford Explorer 4wd 4.0L EFI 6cyl. I am having trouble with starting the vehicle. I go to start the car and the engine sputters and dies. I then go to start the engine again and it has no problem starting. I give it a little bit of gas and it will start rough and return to normal.

Here is what I have done since I have owned the vehicle in a little under 2 years I ahve replaced the Heater Core Twice(Replaced this when I bought this vehicle and replaced it again in January of this year due to it going out again.(Really need to get a copper one made.) ) I have replaced the temperature sensing unit and the Starter, Starter Solenoid. Also removed the catalytic converter since it went bad and replaced it with a straight pipe. I have also done 3-4 Tune-Ups on this thing that included and Oil Changes, Spark Plug replacements, Spark Plug wires, fuel filters and replaced a few worn Hoses. I have noticed during driving in the last 6 months that very rarely the Check engine light will flash on for 2-5 seconds and then go away tried to read the code the 3 times it has done that and nothing shows up.

I think it could be one of these things causing this problem: Crank Sensor, Idle air control valves, TPI. I also noticed when I went to leave this morning my throttle cable was stuck. I haven't checked but I think it is starting to go out. I appreciate any help you can give. This is my Daily driver and I need it to continue to run.

Check the fuel pressure at the valve on the intake. Sounds like the fuel pump is going out.

As for the stuck peddle, some have said that the peddle mounting bracket itself has broke at the firewall. I would give it a complete visual check from peddle to Throttle body. Look for any wear/fraying on the cable, and where it mounts.

As for the stuck pedal. How bad is it sticking? Try lubing the cables, both the throttle cable and the cruise control cable. Check the throttle body, clean the throttle body, and lube the throttle butterfly shaft. There is a screw on the throttle linkage that you can adjust if need be. It will keep the butterfly from going so far closed and sticking. I had to do this on my 96. Be sure to readjust the screw after cleaning the throttle body. As for the starting problem, I concur with gmanpaint. The other thing to consider, is getting coolant in a cylinder. Are you loosing coolant?

The Stuck pedal happened once so it is something I am going to have to watch. No I have not been losing any coolant as I check it on a regular basis due to the heater core troubles. What is the best way to check if the Fuel Pump is going out?

Put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail (on the intake manifold). Fuel pressure should be 35 - 45 psi with the key on and the engine off. With the engine running it should be 28 - 45 psi.
