Hi, i am fairly new to explorers i own a 98 ford explorer sport with premium audio.
I wanted to install my alpine deck so i bought the wiring harness have it all hooked up with power and i am not getting any sound out of the speakers. So a friend told me that ford explorers have a factory amp installed and i probably have to bypass it first to get sound to work. so i removed the rear quarter panel on the passanger side found the amp... Now all i need to know is what kind of wiring harness i need to by pass the amp, one end is a small black square connector and the other is a more rectengular grey connector.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

i did the same thing when i was installing my JVC HU. I didnt know there was an amp so i never hooked up the remote wire from the HU to the harness. If you didnt do that then you will not get any sound because the stock amp never turns on.

Also, here is a little story if anyone cares to listen. I installed the JL 300/4 amp and a full set of Bostons NX-87 with my JVC HU. When it was time to take the system out for my girl, I left the NX-87 with the stock amp and the stock HU and it actually sounded better in my opinion.

Did your truck come with a subwoofer? If it did, then the amp is for that subwoofer. If not, then there's something very wrong, as 98+ should not have an external amp for a system without a sub.

My X didnt have a sub when I got it. All I know is, with remote wire not hooked up, no sound, with it hooked up to harness......sound.

I believe that the integrated HU/amp started midway through the model year, so it is possible to have an early production date that has an external 4 channel amp with no sub. The other possibility is that someone took the sub and sub amp out, like in my Sport. I have another, but haven't had the time to install it.

if there is a best buy with a car audio bay, just go the them and ask for the bypass cable. its like 5 dollars if i remember correctly. be sure to specify that you need the one of the premium audio package.

connect the remote turn on lead behind the deck to turn on the factory amp
