I have a '92 XLT and as I found out when I installed my Alpine HU that I have a external amp. I've been reading alot of topics and you guys seem to highly suggest bypassing the stock amp. By doing this, will I be losing power? also, can I use this amp to power a sub by any chance (is it worth it)? Where is it located?

Oh yeah, I'm new here :D

You shouldnt lose any power, but actually gain power considering the aftermarket deck is at least 35w per channel or more. As far as powering a sub, your head unit alone is not gonna push much or any at all. If you are reffering to the factory amp pushing a sub, I dont think that is possible. The factory amp "I believe" is located in the rear quarter panel (passenger side) in the cargo area. You have to pull the plastic stuff off. Hope this helps.

That's exactly where it is on a 92 XLT. When i put in my new head unit that's where i had to go to bypass the factory amp. You also need a torx 50 to take off the seatbelts so you can take off the panel.

I ended up doing it. It was pretty easy. I bought the harness to bypass it, installed it, took out the amp and I noticed a slight difference in my sound. The HU is now working in full.

HU

Actually ii311hive, you are mistaken. Most aftermarket Head Units claim anywhere from 20 to 50 watts per channel. This is far from the truth, you are lucky if you get a clean 10 to 12 watts per channel!

Rscotts1: The point I was actually trying to make, was that the aftermarket HU should put out more sound/watts then your factory HU/Amp combination.

Headunit

True, an aftermarket HU should put out more than stock/factory amp. Did not mean to step on your toes.....was just making a point.:D
