I have a 2000 Ex XLS with an AM/FM/Cass/CD. I used the CD player for the first time tonight and was sadly disappointed. The CDs started out ok then it quickly started to get progressively more staticky (is that a word?) then came the "Err" message and it turned back to the radio. I tried 3 different CDs, all without 1 scratch and free of fingerprints and everything. Ive had the truck for about a month and no other problems and the interior is pristine and the CD player dust seal is still really tight. Which makes me think it cant be THAT dirty in there.

Should I try a cleaning disk or does it sound like its toast?

were they burned cds? a lot of newer vehicles don't like to or will only partially try and read a burned cd.....

Yeah but thats all I played in my ex's 02 Explorer and it didnt bother it, and if Im not mistaken it had the exact same stereo.

Ok I now know for sure its not the CDs, I tried them in my 05 F-450 work truck and my dads 97 F-150 and they work perfect. Then I tried a store bought CD I have in my truck and still the same thing. Can anyone help?

Laser is getting weak and probably overheating after it runs awhile which causes it to reduce power

The thing that makes a CD 'Multiread' so it can read CD-R and CD-RW is more power to the laser, when the laser starts getting weak or the power automatically reduces due to overheating the first discs to go are your CD-R and eventually it will quit playing even CD-A discs

Best bet is replacement
