strange noise, is this normal?

Hello:
Well, my issue turned out to be tire noise, thankfully. On a side note, I have since found out, from a slip left in the vehicle, that the hub/bearings have already been replaced in March of this year. The slip listed them at 250.00 each. The brakes were also done on all 4 wheels at the same time, including new rotors and pads. The total bill was 1200.00. Thanks again for all the input.

strange noise
my wife has a 99 that makes the same noise. it continues to make it even while completely stopped. it seems to be coming from around the air filter. in fact, i can make the sound change pitch by unlocking the cover. the check engine light came on right about the same time this started. any ideas?

The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve can make a low, humming sound. Do a search on this site for it and you'll come up with lots of information.

wheel bearings or damage tires
For me it sounds like the wheel bearings. Is it sounds like a jet engine when you slow down? IS the increase when you slow down combined with turning the steering?
Try rotating your front tires with the back tires. If the sounds changes to the back, the tires are damage. If it remains on the front, or the back, you have some damages bearings.
My 2 cents. Hope it helps.
