This is an old post, but I have this noise with my 2010 Explorer 6 cyl. We've been in the shop several times to try and locate the problem. Will have them look at the fan and see if that could be the prob. It's very intermittent - mostly hot weather/ a/c on etc. Thanks for the suggestions.
