On another post I talked about the time I took my Ford Escort up the off-road trail at Left-hand canyon to find a better place to go shooting than right at the mouth of the trail. (I thought then, and still do think its too dangerous to have people shooting guns within a few feet of a trail with off-roaders passing by.) I didn't go too far up the trail and was careful where I put my tires and made it with minimal scraping, but two jeep guys thought I was absolutely nuts to even go as far as I did. Anyway, this got me thinking, What is the strangest vehicle you have seen on the trails while off-roading? and where. I thought it would be fun to hear some stories about crazies like myself.

One of my friends took his corsica offroading and tried to make it through a ditch by getting a running start. To get to the point, he broke both motor mounts and the engine nearly fell out trying to get home.

Weirdest vehicle I have sen off road? Probably my 1984 Ford LTD sedan that I had when I was 17. There was a trail that me and my girlfriend at the time would take to have a little "alone time" before I brought her home. Almost got stuck a couple of times, but luckily made it out of there very time and never broke a thing.

my 96 mustang... gravel roads, dirt roads, offroad. had rattles and noises coming from all over after that. needless to say i didn't keep it long. i then got my explorer. going from a 4x4 cheerokee (totaled) to a 4x4 s10 (sold) to a mustang was a mistake... low riding two wheel vehicles do not work well with me.

i offroaded my 96 civic coupe one time... just took it around a little dirt loop with a few hills and some mud... the rooster tails on the sid eof the car looked pretty funny...

The Mighty Mini-Van!

Before I got my Explorer, I had a 99 Dodge Caravan that I drove all over the desert and beaches of Baja. It didn’t have much clearance, but the damn thing was unstoppable! I would just air down the tires to about 10 pounds and keep a little speed on & we just rolled along, happy as you please.

A couple years ago, I took the family to San Felipe for a vacation & we took many adventure trips out in the desert. Turns out, we were there at the same time as SCORE was having a race. One afternoon, we were cruising along a nice flat section & saw a red VW Bug all tricked out & covered with stickers, he was going about 40 or 50 & looked like he was overheating or something.

The kids asked if we can get a better look, so we speed up till we get even with him but still a safe distance away. Well, this guy looks over & just freaks! He keeps looking at us, then down at his GPS & back at us again. The poor guy probably thought he was on the 405 freeway or something. One minute he’s racing in the middle of nowhere & the next, he’s looking at a mini-van full of kids, all smiling and waving at him.

It was a good thing he was going slow though, up a head was a big hill with bunch of people on it & the course curved around the bottom, & when we got up there, a chaser crew was towing out a race car that had just run over a refrigerator at speed & ripped off the front axle.

I remember reading one of the SCORE drivers in the Baja 1000 saying “if your out in the middle of nowhere & you see a group of people… They’re there for a reason!” Seems the locals like to build big jump ramps or dig big holes, or just pile up old furniture & dead animals, right in the middle of the course, & then sit back & watch the carnage!

those people that do that should be charged, thats dangerous

Ever been to the outback villages in mexico, Iv'e hunted game birds all over Baja.
When it comes to charging the locals with questionable activitys, it ain't gonna happen

me and my mom were in her 89' buick skylark 4 door with the qaud4 in it. we were going back to her boy firends cabin. it was a 4x4 trail but my mom just went for it anyway (front wheel drive car). i was eating pizza i was about 5(in 1995) we are going along this patch of sand and wham. the front droped into a ditch in the middle of the trail and my pizza flew into the dash the pizza sause is still there to this day. i though for sure we were stuck. she just put it in R and backed right out. we broke the front licn plate off though. then we got farther down the trail and got to a big mud hole. she wanted to try it. but we were alone and i dident want to get stuck. so we headed back to town (about 200 miles). but when we got passed by a chevy pickup with a lift he looked at us like we were nuts.

she likes her 4x4 explorer much better..lol

why don't you clean that pizza off the dash?

oh yeah, just get stuck in the woods and have a tow truck from from 200 miles away...that would be cheap

LOL im not sure. cause it had sentamental(sp?) value ;) the car is about to be hauled off to the junk yard(it was a huge POS and has gotton worse sense my mom got her explorer..from sitting) but i have alot of memorys in it.

there where plenty of cabins around with 4x4 trucks that would have pulled us out :D

I know a couple people that have offroaded cars.
-One is a Toyota Camry that a girl took offroad, ran over a stump and some other stuff and then had a pretty big amount of money to pay. She ripped out part of the exhaust, busted part of the radiator, and messed up some other stuff.
-I also have two other friends that have gone offroad in Toyotas. One was a carbed 84? Toyota Tercel Wagon and the other was another Camry. Both of them were just going fast then pulling the e-brake and doing 180s and stuff.

The second time I went offroad, we found a really rutty trail. We were going back through there and it was probably the muddiest trail of all of them. Then as my dad and I came over the hill, we saw a Nissan 240SX on the side. I assume he was off in the woods, hunting. I honestly don't know how he got back there. The craziest thing is that the 240 wasn't even muddy

my 95 Taurus SHO... I was arriving at a party in college station and was told to park in the back, but to be careful. While pulling into the field, I noticed many trucks stuck, then I felt my car start to sink. So I put it in reverse slowly hit the gas, I sunk a bit, but moved back at the same time, so I gave it more gas, and more gas and kept moving back, finally I stuck the throttle to the floor, with the Yamaha 3.2 liter screaming at 7,000 RPM, two nice big rooster tails shooting out infront of my car, I made it out, and was proud of my car. Clean up the next day was a pain in the ass, I had mud and grass sticking out of my foglight holes in the front bumper.

back in 99 or so I went on a camping trip with My sister, her Boyfriend, and another friend of ours...The friend was borrowing a Pontiac Firefly sedan from somebody who was overseas. My sister and her Bf had their 97 Cavalier.

We took those 3 and 4 banger FWD cars on a climbing mountain road I wouldn't want to take my X on....

The road led to the free campsite. At one part, we had to rev up to pass some loose mud and debris. The road was pure potholes and stuff also.

The strangest thing I saw off-road was an old mercury comet (really old 4 door). How in the world he got back to where we wheeled I have no idea. I saw it back there several times over a few years when I used to wheel. Go figure.

I've taken a few cars off roading lol when I used to go camping like every month I had a 85 buick park avenue which was actually pretty capable lol never got stuck.
Then I took my 84 chevy caprice to the beach and that was a fun day lol only got stuck twice lol but not to bad nothing like a 5.0 rwd car on the beach.
And finally my 83 pontiac grand prix went into some deep mud and i didnt really care if it got stuck cause it was a POS lol im talking bad gas gauge, no speedometer, no odometer , burned about a quart of oil a week , and had random electrical fires! finally i blew the transmission after one to many neatrual drops :D

Back in 91 my old boss and I took his 1yr old Lincoln Continental baja'ing up and down some W.V. mountain firetrails at night in the rain. Needless to say, we'd been drinking and luckily he did all the driving cause his car was trashed in the morning. We actually had to have it towed to a dealership and fly home. I never saw nor mentioned that car again and neither did he. I think it got totalled out by the insurance company.

my mom used to offroad with an acadian which had side pipes on it back in the 70's. she never got it stuck either. SHe scares me when i let her drive offroad
