I recently purchased a 2015 explorer 3.5 engine. I soon noticed a knocking sound coming from the front when driving over an uneven road. Sounded to me likewise a bad strut. The truck has 64,000 miles on it so a strut could be on its way out.
I took it to a local aes registered repair shop and after a test drive they say it sounds like the strut mounts so probably better to just replace both struts and be done with it.
Did this and noise continued so they surmised that the new passenger side strut was faulty so they replaced it again. Still the same problem.
They now tell me it’s the steering rack that needs be replaced. Can this be true? I’m not hearing any noises except when driving over and uneven road or gravel.
Any thoughts or advice would be very welcome before I commit to this repair only to find that it’s something else.

Sway bar links, control arms. Kind of low mileage for any of those parts to go.
