My 1998 Sport just got stuck in 4WD low and won't shift out.

Also the ODrive light is flashing.

Any thoughts?

The flashing light means the GEM (computer) thinks theres a problem with the transfer case.

I would shut off the engine, wait a few seconds then start and try again. Remember that you need to have the trans in N and your foot on the brake to shift into or out of 4WD low.

The GEM (generic Electronic Module) can be reset by disconnecting the battery. However, if the actuation function itself is stuck, banging on it will sometimes net you one last change

Recommend not to hit the electric shift motor as you will possibly fracture the permenant magnets inside. Best to remove shift motor and check it's function.

Dissconnecting the battery worked great.Could this begin to happen more regularly? Do you think that the GEM should be replaced?

Its more likely that its a problem with one of the shift motor sensors than it is with the GEM. If it happens again, you can have the code(s) read from the GEM with a Ford Enhanced scan tool. This will give you an idea of which component is causing the problem.
