stuck in 4WD

hi guys, this is my first post. just wana say a warm hello and what an awesome forum you guys have got here.
anyways if danman89 is still having probs and is going to have to have his t case looked at or replaced, feel free to pm me if you want help.
not by any means am i saying your prob was/ is the same as mine was, however i did have similar symptoms.
i have (about a month ago) finished rebuilding my 4405 transfer case. (checking everything, repairing what was needed and replacing all bearings and seals.
the end result for all you guys that arent mechanics/fitters, is if your confident to have a go yourself it is well worth the effort tackling some things yourself. (not everything though. lol)
and can save a heck of a lot of money. and if its already stuffed what do you have to lose.

although i had already completed my rebuild, i have since found a post by "glacier991" who has gone to a lot of effort posting an excellent rebuild diary of the 4405 t case with photos etc.

on closing i just want to make it understood that i do not want to step on any ones toes here as i am only a new member, i just want to offer help if people want it. you can pm me if you want. no worries.

cheers

I need some suggestions, but read entirely first.
My '99 explorer XLT will not dis-engage from 4-high, it will go in ant out of 4-lo.
I have replaced the transfer case motor, the swith on the dash, the relay under the hood, and when the motor is removed i can manually switch it to 2WD.
When the motor is hanging loose and i switch it into 4-lo the motor works but when i turn to 2WD the motor does nto work.
So i have eliminated the switch, the motor and the relay and it definatly has power to to the motor and the gears in the transfer case are good.

Please give me any ideas or thoughts.
Dan

Dan did it seem like it was still slightly locked in with slight drag but still able to drive it?

Correct. Simply unplug the harness from the motor (it's a 16-pin connector) The lights will flash but it's no big deal. if the problem goes away, we know it's electrical. If the problem persists, we know it's mechanical.

Not necessarily... Could be a variety of possible things.

No. The motor does not move to engage or disengage 4wd. The motor is responsible for range selection and nothing else. Shifting the case into neutral simply puts the case in neutral. Nothing else. There is no '4high' position, just high range and low range with neutral never-never land in between.

What do you mean never land in between? I read somewhere where you can manually shift it into neutral, I tried this lastnight but had no luck. Now it went from slight drag on front wheels to full blown locked in 4 high?

I'm having this problem with my 2000 xlt, at first it seemed like the front axles were not fully dis-engaged, still driveable but just seemed like there was drag on the front end. The 4wd selector wouldn't do anything, the dash lights would come on but the transfer case wouldn't do anything. So I bought a shift motor and put it on lastnight, not touching the manual selector which was set on the "H" I put the new motor in. In the process of switching wires I broke a couple of the pins and had to piggy backed them to their corresponding numbers on the opposite side. I dropped the truck went to back out to find I'm fully locked into 4 high now. So jacked it back up took the motor back off and grabbed a wrench and thought I put the case in the neutral position according to the markings on the case, apparently not so!! It will switch back and forth from 4h and 4l but will not kick out to auto. I had to pull the front axle so I could drive to work this morning, driving home lastnigt and to work this morning I realized my 4wd dashlights are blinking at me like the plug is unhooked, so I must have a loose wire some where.
I geuss what I'm reading is the problem lies somewhere else and not in the motor as far as kicking to auto.? My question is how to correctly checked the energized wire to the trans case and if you can check the GEM behind the dash. I have put almost $600 in this thing to maintenance it in the last month and it's just one thing after another.
