Do the front axles turn even when not in 4wd? I have a 2000 Eddie Bauer.

If you don't have locking hubs (or automatic locking hubs) then yes, they turn all the time.

in 2wd the front output from the transfercase spins freely though (not engaged) so there is no drive power to the front end, it's just free spinning.

try making a sharp turn, and see if it feels like it's in 4wd (tire scuffing, hopping, extra drag etc)

Thanks. Seems that everything is working OK then. My switch to 4high engages the front axles and they whine when I drive so I know they are engaged.
Thanks

yeah, only 95-96.5(?) had a vacuum disconnect in the front axle housing.
all 2nd gen have live hubs that are not selectable, so the front shafts and driveshaft will always rotate.
