91 sport with manual tranny. Don't have the truck yet, but it is stuck in fourth gear. Used to pop out of gear when it was shut off, but now, permenantly stuck in fourth gear.

I used to own this explorer and have allready had the tranny rebuilt. NOT going to rebuild this one again, even though it did last almost 5 years and about 80,000 miles of leadfoot driving (my brother).

Going to gut this thing and run strictly off road, so I might consider a different tranny and t-case combo IF this one is junk.

I also know that the clutch and possibly the internal slave cylinder are junk. Will this have anything to do with this. If I pull the tranny and have it checked will this be worth it or is it now a boat anchor?

Thanks

John

Sounds to me like you need to replace/repair the transmission. If it will still shift with the engine off, then it may be a clutch/slave cylinder issue. Good luck.

i am going to be getting a truck with th esame problem.. is there a rebuild kit for theese.

There is, but it is costly. The first time I had this transmission rebuilt it cost 900$ just for an output shaft and one gear. Took it back 1 month later cause another gear went out. (would have been cheaper if I would have just rebuilt the whole thing the first time).

Your looking around 1500-2000 for a complete rebuild, unless you do it yourself.

but what would actualy cause it to get stuck in forth... the funny this is the truck im going to get is also stuck in forth...

I have no clue, I am going to pull the tranny on Monday and take a look at it. Barring any tranny problems (broken gears inside etc....) it might have something to do with the clutch/slave cylinder.

Won't know till I get it apart.

Since the tranny seems to be trashed already, you migth as well take it apart and se what the problem is. You can get soft parts rebuld kit for around $200.

There are several other threads that tell where to get parts.

There was one thread that had assembly/disassembly documents. I have a copy of them if you would like.

absolutly if you have them on hand... i think i will try the rebuild my self... hell 500 in parts and 300 for the truck sounds like a good deal for the begining of a great trail rig....

Here you go, M5OD tranny manual.

Assembly Manual

Let me know if it works

Right on thanks alot ill do a post on the rebuild...... i found a rebuild kit on ebay... 300 not to bad.....

ANy Luck? It's been awhile.

well i decided i didnt have the tools for the job after getting the thing open so i sold the case to a refab garage and also sold my auto tranny to buy a used tranny from colorado.. the reason was that the input shaft was so chewed up it wasnt funny snd about half of the rest had to be replaced.. i hsve some pics of the insided if anyone is interested.. thaks for the help..
