stuck on my box...

hmm well with the price being half of what i paid for the fleece, i think i could atleast do 6 layers, maybe...

this project is going to cost more than i thought (resin is the most expensive part)

thus far price estimation on materials...

$21 on fleece
$20 MDF wood
$21 on fiberglass mat
$25 or $35 per gallon on fiberglass resin
$2 for brushes
$3 on wooden dowls(sp?)
$ for time spent to make it, priceless

the fleece isnt going to be near as strong as the mat. the mat is what adds your strength, not the fleece.

Going back to the airspace issue...
I just made two separate boxes, each for two 12" gTi's. The top of the boxes are pretty much flush with the rear side windows, and go over the wheelwells like you have in your carboard template. The boxes are made with 1" MDF, I have a space cutout to fit a battery in and the total airspace came out to 3.95 cubes per box (not counting sub displacement).

mine goes over by like 2 inches or so, and the depth is like 25"

Looks a lot like mine. 7cft tuned @ 32hz w/ 2 RE SE 15's.

oh wow.

how many layers and of what?

MDF sides, back, bottom, and port. One layer of fleece resined up, then 4 overlapping layers of mat on top (8 single layers). Expo guided me through most of it, if you want any help talk to either him or I on aim. My SN is tempossone.

layering fleece would be a really bad idea btw.

i'm on aim at wattsupcustoms

i'm tempted to post pictures of the escape and explorer boxes... i won't do it to ya though

heh.

i think i bought enough fiberglass mat, somewhere around 51' (17 yards)

im thinking 3 layers for the amp rack part (since it doesnt have to support 140lbs) and 8 layers for the subs. not to mention the 1 layer of fleece

now i need to go to the store and find the resin... i found a 5 gallon barrel was like $125ish which i think is cheaper than 5 1 gallon cans (either $25 or $35 per gallon)

my 5 gallon pails are only $89 here locally. but you'll probably need 3-4 gallons for your job, so it might be worth going with the 5 even at that price.

ok finally started on the box, i dont know hwo long it will take me but well see.

thus far ive built the main structure of the box (everything but the front and port). tomorrow i will make the MDF sub rings and port, and hopefully get it preped (or even get the first layer) for glassing.

i dont know how im going to do a glass structure for the amps (mounted on top of the sub box angled toward the back) but ill find a way...

im still awaiting a package to come in the mail so i could move the secondary battery to the old sub spot and have all the distro blocks and things needed to make the wiring happen correctly.

im going to have to relocate the car jack and what ever else is in that little side pocket, or redo it so that it opens from the top.

ill take pictures of the progress tomorrow.

updates will come every so often because im not planning on finishing this asap (but the sooner the better)

the box looks good, im about to do something similar im my 03 explorer once i get it, im doing two 10" image dynamic sound quality subs. i would suggest doing a sealed box for your case though, just because with the port and everything i think it might be difficult to tune the box since all of the curves and what not, unless you have experience otherwise.

ive decided on the ported, i found a site that suggests the port depth . i should be good. im going for close to 30hz (i know it wont be because like you said the curves and all that)

cool man, good luck then!

oh man i got to thinking right now, not sure i should put the ports on the side or middle

*note my box is similar to temposs's box (post #45)

opinions on which is better?

heres some of my progress.

DSC02982.jpg

i have it built, but have no idea if it will fit, i might have to disassemble it and build it inside to get it to fit. if i do that, then ill just glass it inside the truck while its there.

More countersunk screws! Liquid nails/caulk the edges.... and bracing, oh my God bracing... please brace that enormous box some. Those 15" x.. are going to flex it like crazy.

Looks like a good start though.

yeah, bracing.

for the record the large flat back side of my box (3 9500 15s) is 1.5" of mdf then 1/4" steal bars (spaced so they cover it all with only a few inches between them max) and then 3/4 more of mdf... with 1.5" only it shook so bad i thought it was going to break.

the fiberglass part doesn't flex at all (10 layers or so everywhere)

err would ported flex that much?

got the liquid nails, just havent started using it yet, got plenty of screws, but used the wrong size bit to pre drill the current holes so i will be adding quite a bit more, none of the screws are counter sunk (yet).

so for tomorrow im hoping to possibly disasemble the box (after finding out it fit perfectly in the back) use liquild nails on the actual joints, and screw holes, then put it back in the truck then do the edges with liquid nails also.

the only bracing i was considering was the port brace, top to bottom (right in the middle of the box about half way deep or whatever it measure to be tuned to approx. 30hz). any other suggestions on added bracing design?? steel bars seem like a little much. i think i might use a 2x4 for bracing or even a 2x2, i wont be cranking it to the fullest at all times, just the occassional beating out someone that doesnt lower theirs at a stop.

this kind of sucks with no one to help me but myself. this is a 1 man project and i want to get it done before the end of next week (build and finished glassing), painting will come later

i did some MDF rings, but they came out looking like crap, im hoping it will hold the sub (which i highly doubt because the outer ring doesnt have much of a lip.

more pics soon

I have always been told that sealed subs give a cleaner bump as compared to the ported ones. Ported is louder, but clean is where it's at. IMHO.
