Stupid EGR question

I think this is my first post here. I have a 91XLT 2wd with 136k.
This the first problem I haven't been able to solve in sometime. My check engine light started coming on after about 20-30 mins of driving and my mileage went to about 14mpg from the usual 23. It's also running very rich. I had it checked with a computer today and it came up with a bad Oxy. Sensor and EGR valve. I mechanic said to replace the sensor and clean the EGR valve. Only problem is I can't find the EGR in Hayne's book. Maybe I'm overlooking it, not sure. Someone point me in the right direction.
After reading about the Fuel Pressure Reg. thing the, symptoms sound just like mine. I think I'll try the Oxy sensor route first and if that doesn't do it I'll go after the FPR. I've noticed that the fuel pump sounds kind of like it's pulsing at idle. That's one I hope I don't have to tackle. This vehicle has been great, I've got 135k on it and the two most major things I've done to it was radius arm bushings and a power steering pump. Thanks, Grateful

91 s dont have an EGR valve, so your not going to find it.

Check out your FPR first. The bad reg may have caused the O2 sensor the probs, and leaving a bad FPR in could cause the same problems with the new O2 sensor.

SteveVB, the 91's do have an EGR valve and it's located on the drivers side fuel rail right underneath the vacuum hose octopus. It is the closest thing to the firewall and it actually plugs in to the top of the fuel rail. Grateful11, an easy way to check the EGR valve is to remove it from the fuel rail and vac. hose and shake it in your hand. If it doesn't rattle, go down to Autozone and get one for $3, don't try to clean it (it won't work)!!! Hope this helps and good luck!!!!

I think your confusing the EGR and the PCV. As far as I know 91s dont have an EGR valve. I dont think the EGR valve was added until 93, although the CA emmissions vehicles may have had it earlier, I dont know.

SteveVB, you are absolutely right. I should learn not to post any advice before I've had my morning coffee. The part I was talking about was the PCV valve. Doh!! I'm just going to crawl back into my little corner and lick my wounds! Sorry about that.

EGR...

The EGR valve is on the same side as the PVC but before the octopus ting. It as a steel tube(or rusted tube) that goes directly to the exhaust. But still try the FPR first, it is a common problem to the early Explorer and would cost less than the EGR.

OK, I've looked and looked on my 93 but can find nothing that resembles an EGR valve. No tubes coming off the exhaust manifold anywhere. Does anyone know absolutely for sure what year they started putting EGR's on Explorers?? If a 93 doesn't have one is their an equivilant part that causes exhaust gas to be routed to the intake??? Someone please answer this EGR mystery once and for all!!

I've got one small problem with this FPR. I went to Autozone and they listed two for my model. They only had one so I got it. I've got a 50/50 chance I guess of having the right one. Does anyone know what the difference is between the two is? BTW the O2 sensor was $40 and the FPR was$70. It took me awhile to find the FPR, I'm going to use the directions that I found on another site for changing it. It's really crammed in there.
I'll let everyone know how it goes. Hopefully I'll be done sometime Sat.

I went to Autozone and they listed two for my modelthe FPR was$70. It took me awhile to find the FPR, I'm going to use the directions that I found on another site for changing it. It's really crammed in there.

Car parts has the FPR listed for around $30. But they only list one. http://www.carparts.com
Whats the site you looked at for directions to change it.
It looks like I'm about to change mine too.

Guess what, I got the wrong one. I needed the one with the threaded gas fitting. I found one at another AutoZone, 3 bucks more. It's on hold until tomorrow. It's pretty crammed in there but not too bad once you remove the intake hose, radiator hose and the air filter boxtop. I'll bet those two screws go in harder than they came out.

Grateful11, I found that using a swivel extension right behind the socket helped quite a bit, but you will still need to bring a lot of patience with you when you put the screws back in. Good luck.
