Yup, I too have fallen victim of the engine sucking.. Occasionally, back in the day, the CEL came on. It was usually 70mph, under load (hill or passing someone) and i found with high octaine, never had that problem, only when using low octaine... Anyways, yesterday, driving back to school on good gas, i noticed my power from about 1000-2000rpm the motor bogged horribly. Then if ya really stomp on the gas, it'd jump to about 3k, and just crank like it always has.. Now, the check engine light is on, no, i dont have a code reader, but with my 94 limited, is this one of them thingys autozone can check out fer free? Also, my theorys are clogged cats, or fuel filter...

I dont plan on buying a reader unless last resort, cause im darn near broke. I've searched, and read a lil about the TPS and IAC... I've cleaned the MAF within the past 2 months, so I doubt that is it. I also read the TPS and IAC can be common problems.. What do these parts run, and are these ford only parts? Oh, where the hell are they? Go figure, my Haynes manual is 230mi away at home. Oh, also read some having problems with the FPR... i dont see how this oculd be my problem, since once ya hit about 3k, the thing just motors along perfectly! gonna check the vacuum lines this afternoon, anyone got more for me to look at?
Thanks guys!
Pete

That realy sounds like the IAC as it only moves at 3k rpm or more and since your engine then runs smoothly I would guess that it's stuck open.
It's under the plastic cover on top of the engine at the back just unscrew and clean.
My 2 pennies worth any way.

I was going say something about how you could have used the money you wasted on the 5.0 swap to get it fixed, but I decided to be nice.

Take it to AutoZone and have them code it for you. Nobody on here is going to be able to give you a straight answer.

Autozone should be able to do it, or you can do it yourself with a piece of wire and either use the CEL to read the trouble codes or a cheap analog voltmeter. The how-to for an OBD-1 vehicle have been discussed before.

it actually could be your FPR. If it's stuck open then you'd be running really rich until about 3k rpm.

update

Well took the truck out today, ran it for about an hour, both locally, and the interstate... CEL came on once fer about 10 second, and then was off the rest of the time... Happened about 5min after starting... Seemed to run fine... I noticed at the vacuum junction thingy, seem as though there was a very light bit of spray from some unknown liquid, had no smell, but was oily.. no clue what it was... My only guess, is that the truck does it, after being run for a long time (trip to school was 4hrs on the interstate) but thankfully winter is comming when everything runs cooler, and usually normally...
If anyone has any more ideas, I'm open to hear em!
Thanks
Pete

That oily liquid may be fuel leaking into the vac lines. I know you said it didn't smell like anything, but still...

Sometimes if the FPR is bad fuel will get into the vac line leading to the FPR itself.

Autozone only does 96 and newer vehicles! :( I took our mini van in since the CEL has been on for a long time and wanted to get the exact code before I go replacing everything. Turns out they only do OBDII, which is 96 and newer. Would've been nice if they had said that in their little blurb.

Anyways how do I check the CEL with a voltmeter? Give me simple step by step??? :D All I know is the exhaust STINKS when we run the van so I have no idea what it could be...

Check the plugs just to make sure

I found oily substance on mine was trans fluid, the modulater was leaking and allowing the fluid to get sucked into the intake via the vacuum lines. Probably not causing your bogging problems, just another problem all together. The tranny fluid will eat away at the rubber lines causing air leaks though.

Well here are some photos... i think i might have a trans/vacuum system problem...

Here are my few ideas... it usually takes 3+ hrs driving the interstate to get it to screw up... but if it's really hot, it's sooner... I think there is either a vacuum problem... or possibly the torque convertor... oh, after closer analasys, i think the fluid that has spurted up from the tubes, is trans fluid... the scent is faint, but it's the closest thing i can smell...

Pete,

The same thing happens with my '94. Originally it would be that after about two hours on a long drive the CEL would come on and the engine would bog horrbly. I stomp on the gas and it would run normal for about five miles then start the process all over.

Now the CEL is coming on when just driving around town. The engine doesn't seem to bog, but I haven't taken the truck on a long drive in a while.

Originally, the code it threw at me was for some sensor voltage thing, (I'll have to go out and check it again). I have one of those $30 scanners that I got at the Autozone (in Macomb :D). It works good enough for me.

I have also asked my mechanic about it and he seems to think that it might be that the cat has gone bad. It gets so hot in there and that whatever is in the cat that makes it work is not good any more and plugs it up somewhat.

I'm waiting until I get the money to do the cat and O2 sensors at the same time. I haven't changed the O2 sensors since I have bought the vehicle.

Hopefully this helps some, I'll pull the code before the Nascar race today and post the codes I am throwing.

Dave

Well I went out and pulled the codes, but the engine wasn't warm enough to throw the one that it is supposed to. I will try driving it around later on this afternoon after the race.

On the vacum tree, pull one of the plugs, you will probably find trans fluid, mine did that and a modulator took care of it. As far as cel on at 70 miles per hour mine did that a couple of times during summer while driving long distance. After slowing back down it would goe off and is now fine, my guess is fuel pumpnot keeping up at higher r.p.m's. my r.p.m's at 70 is right around 2900. Will be taking same trip in a couple of weeks and will watch to see if I still have this problem during cooler temps.

EXPLODER-1 you must have 4.10's turning RPM's that high at 70 MPH. I have 3.73's and turn 3000 at 80 to 82 MPH (sometimes a little more, somtimes a little less (I still haven't figured that out)).

In any case, I didn't get a chance to pull the codes today. I'll be sure to do it tomorrow.

Dave
