Okay i know this is prbably a stupid question but i know very little about equalizers(sp). I have a Sony CDX-M730 HU and was wondering if i should get one...or if ill be fin without one. **I have JBL Power Midrangers and JBL Power Amp (p80.4)** If that info helps any.

EQ's are always a nice toy. Weather or not you NEED one could be debated. With an EQ you can custom tailor your system to suit what ever you are listening to.

Is there a built in crossover selector in the amp? Because you can just set to hi the run them, but like MONMIX said you can customize your tune too what style of music your listening to to get the best sounds

The way I see it is that equalizers are just something more for whoever's riding shotgun to mess with. Sure they make your music sound a little better, but if you get one, count on someone to constantly be fiddling with it.

Yeah just when you got it dialed in, Somebody moves every slide on the EQ!
I agree you can refine the sound to your paticular vehicle and taste.

Two words ,

BROKEN FINGERS.

HEHE..........yea I gotta small 1/4 din eq in my BMW, which my brother likes to borrow. I set it like U, and when it comes back, it is like ~. But they are a nice thing to have.

Okay, so which one is a good one? and about how much would a good one cost? Im not looking for like top of the line just one that is worth they money and isnt going to be a waste of money.

In my Blazer I had a Pioneer 8-band eq. 8-bands is plenty for automotive uses. I can not recall what I paid for it but I recon it was less then $200.00
It also has a sub-out with a parametric level out selector. It is real nice.
It is the same width as a normal head unit so with a normal head unit plus the eq it should fit the large opening found in Explorers.
It will go into my Ex pretty soon.

My Sony ES 8050X HU has a 6 band built right in, that is one of the reasons I bought it. it also have a built in 3-way crossover and 4 sets of RCAs.

But enuf about my stuff, getting an eq is good, but if you haven't already looked for one, the Sony XDP 766EQ is a :bounce: BADASS :bounce: eq, but it is full din & is uninlink controlled (via the HU).

You also might look into AudioControl's 3.1, it is 1/2 din & is 5 band, but it as 8V preouts.

anywho, goodluck with it.

Morrisey actually the shape is not the issue.
I see lot of folks do the U or the smiley face as I call it.
Here is the thing. It looks cool but what does it do to the sound. The smiley face is all highs and lows but no mids. With the ,,,,, okay I can't find the key that makes the thing you made but you are with me. You cut out a bunch of your high mid's. I am not sayin' this is wrong but I am sayin' understand what these neat shapes and patterns are doing to your sound.
The eq that was in my Blazer was set up to cut out a bit of the too high upper mid stuff and smooth out the low a bit. Lets see if I can some how show you that.

I
_____I________I___I__I_______I______________
I I

Imagine the center line is the 0db +/- center of the eq
and the I's obviously are the sliders. In my Blaser with the speaker configuraion in there that is what I neeeded. I use an eq more to take out the unwanted tones in the system than other wise. A method common to Pro-Audio ( concert sound )
Any way , I have rattled on long enough. I am gonna go get some lemon-aide

EDIT : Okay it did not turn out how it did when I was writting , so ignore this post completely.:(

MONMIX
Yea, I have seen many EQs with the smiley face over the years. I use it in my BMW because that is how it sounds best to me. Most of my passengers can't stand it. I have about 15% hearing loss in both ears and my frequencies are all screwy compared to "normal" ears. So, what I hear and what others hear are completely different things. So, I keep my EQ at close to a U with a slight drop in the highest band. Those real highs bother me.

But I know exactly where you are coming from.............
