a friend of mine is going to get a small system, just a 10 inch sub and a 5 channel amp. what would be the best route for about a $700 + - budget

The best route? Save his money since it's a waste in the long run.

you mean save the money until he has more to spend, or dont get a system at all

which factory system does he have?

does he need a new head unit?

new door speakers front/rear?

does he mind giving up cargo space?

I meant save and not get one at all. Subs are cool to start but a lot of people think they get old and then you're stuck with a huge hole in your pocket. Plus if you change your mind a short while later, you won't get nearly as much back on the return. I have made many foolish purchases over time that I don't know why I made them. Unless he just has a ton of extra cash floating around, there is are better things that could be bought with that money.

there is a yahoo store, called "discountjungle", i've found that has pretty good prices for the value on all car audio,
i would say one 10 would be lil weak depending on the car he has, might want to just power the subs is what i have done, sounds fine, course my doors are powered thanks to ford factory amp.

u should be a little more specific..are u needing just the subs/amp and box for 700 or the whole system..theres many many maaaaaaaaaaany ways to blow 700bucks on a stereo

get tired of a sub? imo its an essential part of any system. that would be like getting rid of the highs or mids on your stereo, just not good.

its an 03 mustang he is getting an alpine 9815 head unit and he is buying component speakers, the 700 is just for the amp and sub, he is planning on spending 1500 all together
