OK, I have been building a custom enclosure (building up my floor, it helps hide the amps and any other tools I want to store!). I am at a point now to decide how to do my subs.

My first design was a box facing the rear, I hear the sound is better but i have two concerns.
1) stuff sliding around and hitting one
2) the fact that they then scream out - "STEAL ME!"

Another option - just turning it around and facing the seats, there would be a 3 - 5 inch gap, what would that do to SQ? I think this idea will look more stock and hidden.

option 3 - floor facing, but they would only have air right above the amps and behind the seats so more "enclosed" than facing the seats.

What do you guys think?

I've never had a problem with stuff sliding around and hitting my sub, and I have a ton of stuff back there. To make them not so visible, I place a dark bedsheet over the box and hide all the excess sheet behind the box. That way nobody knows what's under the sheet and how nice your subs are. It also doesn't effect the sound the sub makes, or atleast a difference I can hear. Ask a buddy to borrow his single sub in a single box if you have a buddy that has one. Point it in different directions in your Explorer to see what you like. My bet is you'll like it loud and clean and will want the subs rear firing. Good luck, and if you really don't want it jacked, put 5% tint over the existing factory tint. You can see out (barely) but when you press your face to the glass to see in, you can't see in at all.

I am sure nothing will slide around and hit it now that I think about it, but I also am trying to make something that looks clean and factory. It looks sharp so far, but I just don't know... if it doesn't affect the sound too much I would like to face them towards the seat, but if it is a noticiable differance it isn't worth it. as for the 5%, I did that once, couldn't see jack!

forward facing probably wont sound as good in your explorer. lower frequencies have to travel greater distances. to get the best sound quality and spl, you should have it rear facing. facing down will narrow the frequency range (kinda like in a bandpass enclosure). you'll get good output in that range, but you'll lose a lot of the deep bass. if you face it up, you'll just lose some sq as some canellation with the waves running together. it wont sound bad, just not as good as rear facing.
