I think my sub blew so its time to replace it. If im going to spend any money i might as well get something better than i have. This question has to have been asked a million times before but i cant find the answer. What do i need? Im new to all this and not sure of all the things needed. To make it work what do need other than an amp and sub.
o yea im planning on putting it in the panel where it is now.

Thanks,
Mike

You can replace your stock sub with an aftermarket amp/sub, but unless you change out your HU, it isnt really worth it. I can tell you how if you really want to. The problem is that all you will be doing is making the bass louder...and the bass volume doesnt incease linearly with the HU volume. It gets to a point where the volume knob will just turn up the front speakers and the sub will stay at a constant(loud) volume. In my opinion, unless you just want really loud bass(to annoy other people with), I would say just replace the sub and nothing else. If you replace it, find the most efficient sub you can. I have a stock sub for sale if you just want to replace it.

it is my opinion that you will get better sound reproduction with just an aftermarket HU and some upgraded door speakers. The reason the stock door speakers will need replaced is because they will not play bass.

Is it the 6.5'' sub?

My '93 Limited had the/a stock one when I bought it. That one blew and 6.5 subs hardly exist. At advance auto parts they had a really cheap speaker box with two 6.5'' subs for $20. So I pulled those out and replaced the old one. They hit pretty decent.

At max bass (stock head unit, stock JBL system, stock everything) they kinda wore out. So earlier this week I picked up pretty much the same thing from Walmart ($20 again). It's hitting decent at 1/2-2/3 bass level.

You can get like Pyle and Legacy 6.5'' subs from ebay but I doubt they're any better than the Walmart subs. And with Walmart, if/when they blow, just return em and get new ones :D.

If I remember right, a new sub from Ford is pretty expensive

Thanks a lot! I think i'm just going to get a 8" sub off ebay. That should fit right in right?

I have a stock 8" sub for sale for $40.

JL Audio

Google JL Audio, they have a complete sub with enclosure made for the Explorer to fit inside the cavity where the old one went.

Dwight P

A bit pricey though

What are the specs im looking for that will be like factory? (other than 8")
Unless anyone has a cheap one for sale.
