Yeah im thinking the cats are clogged or something of the sort. Cut em off, bang all the crap out, then clamp 'em back on and see if it fixes the problem. If so, go have a muffler shop get you some new cats on there.

Another good way to tell. If you drive it for a while then look under and see if the cats glow red. Usually if they are REALLY clogged, they will get so hot that they will glow. I'm almost positive based on your description that its clogged cats

Dude be very careful here. The first thing you need to check before turning your truck on again is the battery. It is full of sulfuric acid and lead. Check the battery out, pull it out. If any of the sides of the battery are bulged out, then you probably have to replace the alternator. The alternator might be over charging the battery. If the voltage regular goes out it can do one of 2 things, it can go out and not charge the battery, or short and put the full output of the alternator to your system. That sizzling sound might be parts of your electrical system frying. This can cause a fire and you can loose you vehicle or worse yet someones life if they can't escape. The problem is the full voltage of alternator can reach 400V depending on engine speed without the regulator to inhibit the output to 13.6V. The reason I know this is because it happened to me. Luckily I only fried the radio. After that check out the cat and so on. The engine running rough part might be because the ignition system isn't working well with battery getting the big charge.

Antifreeze going through the combustion chamber ruins your O2 sensors and cats.. Sorry.

ok batt and alt are fine i had the the cats cheaked there fine it was the stupid fuel injectors and 400 dollors later my explorer is running great, and i was 100% sure it was the cats.

Thanks for all your help

Did you get the stock injectors? I know the we can order some with a higher flow rate capability for future upgrades. I did this on a previous car I had and it was nice because the old injectors would be at about 85% duty cycle at 3500 rpm. The new ones were at 60% so I had more head room for playing with the car.

there aftermarket weather they have a better flow or not i dont know there just suppose to be better i guess

The bad injector(s) must have been leaking gasoline. The overly rich mixture passes through engine and goes to the CAT. The vehicle must have run poorly. With non-CA fuel (low sulfer) fuel in the cat, H2S is formed (Hydrogen Sulfide) and the smell you noticed. It would have gotten pretty danged hot too (sizzling).

My 91 Maxda Navajo (4.0 OHV) only has one O2 sensor so there is no way to check cat performance. If Ohio has an annual inspection and your area checks exhaust emissions, let us know if you pass on your next inspection.

What's interesting is no CEL light. I've always suspected that the O2 logic in my vehicle was not that sophisticated. I would think that a constantly rich mixture would have been noticed as the PCM tunes the emission.
Thanks for the follow-up.

ohio has no inspection
