First I think I would have went with( and I will be going with) 4.56 gears These aod's love to shift early, and build heat. In your situation, IF you had the coin, I would do gears ...again..ugh! sorry but I would, then build the trans (only because I dont see it in your sig of whats been done?) then of course..searching throghout the USA for a bolt on s/c..lol. I have no idea of what parts of mustangs kits, f150 lightning kits, etc would be of pieces/parts help, although if I was in the position, I would be researching that as well. I dont think I would discount a turbo, or even a STS style turbo either. Im currently slowly build our 5.0 to also haul expedition style back roads, along with a nice size AC TRV or Outtie Max.
The 4.10 gears for me were cheap. I already had a 4.10 LS rear end out of a '00 Explorer with 20k miles that I had in my '94 for a while and kept it when I traded to the '98. I then found a 4.10 front carrier from a salvage yard out of a '00 ranger with 63k miles on it for $150 ... just had to replace all the seals.
I think 4.56 would be great with a little larger tires, but not with near stock size like I have. I found some gearing/RPM calculators on the net when I looked at it and you're going to be turning really high RPM's just before the transmission shifts from 2nd to 3rd at 60mph.
The perfect gearing for me would have been 4.27's ... they would have put the peak torque RPM of the TM headers right at about 65-70mph. But, no one makes these for our reverse front ends.
As far as the transmission, have just added a Mag-Hytec pan with 4qts extra capacity. No transmission problems ...
