What's up,

I've searched around on the site and found some info but I really need to narrow this problem down because it is seriously starting to make me angry. I Just got my truck back from ford they did the 01m01 warranty work and took a month and a half with my truck. Before i took it to them I removed the chip. I just got the truck back a few days ago and I went to install the chip again and now the truck will not start. and the check engine lite flickers like crazy when i try to start it. I've made sure that it is making good contact with the computer port, and reset the computer by unplugging the negative terminal overnight. I also filled my tank with premium, still no start. What could be the problem ? Could ford have reprogrammed my computer, it doesn't state on the reciept that they did. . What else could be wrong ?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Doesn't 01M1 recall have to do with the cam tensioner? If so then whatever they did to your cam must have changed its operating parameters enough to where the Superchip is now programmed wrong for the way your cam operates. Before they messed with your cam, it ran fine with the chip, so that means they must have changed the way the cam operates--and thus your chip won't work. You may have to get your chip re-burned.
I would have left the chip in, they probably wouldn't have noticed, and maybe then they would have correctly set the cam and EEC to operate together properly, if the dealer can even do that. A Ford dealer or any other shop can't deny you service just because you have a chip installed. (see Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act)

Keep in mind I am not a 2nd gen Explorer expert so take all of this with a grain of salt. Maybe someone else knows for sure.

Huh? He said the truck won't even start.

They probably reflashed your computer with an update. They are supposed to put a sticker somewhere. If you can't find it, go back to the dealer and ask them what the new computer code is. Unfortunately, the chip will need to be re-burned.

Right, that's what I was saying Jason-- and if the EEC can't understand the signals it's getting from the position sensor, it may not let you start the truck. Therefore he needs to have the chip re-burned. I guess I was too vague in my response...i was just trying to keep it simple..

what should I ask ford for ?

I thought that was it , just wanted to get some second opinions . . .anyone else ?

thanks,

Nick -

A little late, but I don't get on much lately. Ford issued a recall that involves reflashing the PCM. It mostly affects Explorers with 3.73 axles. It seems that some Explorers left the factory with the top speed limiter programmed for the RPMs that the 4.10 axles generate. The RPMs are a couple hundred RPM higher with the 4.10 than they are with the 3,73. What this does is allows the Explorer's top speed to exceed the top speed that Ford had in mind. It also exceeds the top speed rating of the tires. They will reflash your PCM with the correct top speed limiter. They should have put a sticker on somewhere when they did it, however when I had my local dealer reflash my PCM for a different issue they didn't put the sticker on. I ended up going up to them and having them read the PCM softwre version that they put in so that I could e-mail it to SuperChips when I ordered my chip. They also put the sticker on at that time. You can either have your dealer read the software version in your PCM and provide that to SuperChips or you can send your PCM to SuperChips and they can get you the right code. If you have your dealer do it, they will probably give you hassles and either won't want to do it or will likely want you to pay them to do it. Either way though, you will likely have to pay SuperChips about $100 for a reflash to the new code.

Could this have happened to my 96 Explorer? I had taken it into the shop once and afterwards my chip never worked, i wonder if ford changed my code? because it would always either not start or just idle very rough....?

I'm not sure if the '96 was included in the recall or not. I remember first hearing about the recall about 2 or 3 years ago but can't remember which years it applies to. I can't find any history of the recall on Alldata for my '97.

Robert Thanks for the info , they did recalibrate that tranmission module when it was in there , and they put a sticker on the inside of my door it says calibration and then a bunch of numbers could this be it ?

thanks

Nick

Yes, but they probably didn't put your new PCM code on the sticker (mine didn't). You'll have to have your PCM scanned to determine its new 4-digit code to get your SuperChip reflashed to your new code.

man what a hassle, but that chip does help a considerable amount

does autozone do this?

No, they won't have the equipment.

For what it's worth... My '98 SOHC would die every once in a while while driving, then, after a week of that, it died completely. It wouldn't start at all for the rest of the day.
Once it was towed to the dealer, it would idle very rough and die. Many $100's in diagnostics later, a fried superchip was determined to be the problem. It was just over one year old, and I still got no love from Superchips. Add that to the nonexistant benefits of having a functional chip, and wow, I was a happy customer!

My '98 OHV would die every two days or so with the chip in. Once it cut off and would not start. I took out the chip and it fired right up. I hope it is not a fried superchip but that is probably the issue. I've emailed Superchips, but it does not look like I will get a responce. A great way to waste $250!

Problem with chip understood

After talking to a technician, I was sent another chip. My truck would still stall with the chip in, so I determined it must be a contact problem.
Well i talked to a technician from Superchips and found that the problem arose from the computer moving around in the firewall. They dont offer the chips in the ohv's anymore because of this problem. He told me they will introduce a programmer for the ohv to correct this problem. If your OHV is doing the same thing, i would recommend calling, because these chips have a lifetime warranty and they will replace it. If it still doesnt work out, just pay the difference and get the programmer in january.
