I'd check that where you plugged it in to the computer that the connection is completely clean. When Ford puts the computers int ehre the connection has a gummy sticky sort of substance put on it, you may want to make sure that ALL of that gummy icky stuff is cleaned off and that the metal is shiny underneath. TO do this best you may even want to take the computer all the way out of the vehicle and clean it off with a phillips screwdriver, a razorblad, or even steel wool. If you just took off the plug and plugged in the superchip its quite possible the vehicle wouldn't crank. Now, if you remove the superchip, does it crank?

although you may right, I'm not sure if our boxes need jumpers or not, I installed a superchip in my f-150 that did not require a jumper but I'm not sure if the explorers do or not.

Yes it does, but Chris adviced that a need a jumper inside the computer box, I clean the connector very well.

I am going to call superchip on monday I beleive Chris from (SmartyParts) stated that I can send the computer to superChip and have them do at no cost.

This problem could only happen to me!

does anyone know if it is the same with the '99 sport.I bought mine from KKM,and my truck would not start either.I called him up and he told me I just did not get off all the laquer
that was under all that grease,he did not tell me about any jumper setting's, Dead Link Removed
also, also I noticed that with the superchip on the back of the computer, the computer does
not go all the way back into the firewall,so now the rubber or plastic surounding plate, does not "seal" the computer to the firewall, there is a space the depth of the superchip. Dead Link Removed

mattadams,

I'm not clear what you mean by "gummy stuff". The harnesses that we install here at the Lorain Assembly (Econolines), have the connections filled with a white electrical grease. The harnesses come in this way from the vendor. This is to seal out contaminents and keep the contacts from oxidizing.

Quick and easy question...Did you unhook the battery, leaving the cables off for 5 or 10 minutes, and then hook them back up? The computer must have the power taken off of it so that it will re-learn the settings with the new chip.

Yeh, Unhook your battery again and try to start it again. I agree with Zeuss.

I unhooked my negative cable, just like the blue instruction sheet told me to do so.it was unhooked for about 30 min.on sun afternoon,i'm going to take the comp case appart and do another complete cleaning job on it???.

Well I called SuperChip and they adviced that for the 1991 there is no jumpers, and that I may have gotten a bad chip or the program which was down loaded was corrupt. However, I got in contact with Chris from SmartyParts and he got the same response from SuperChip. New Chip is in the mail.

I just got My Superchip from Smartyparts about 2 weeks ago. When I installed it in my '98 it wouldn't start either. I got with Chris and he told me to get with Superchip. They had it back to me overnight after soldering a jumper wirg in the box. I also sent the chip with it so they could check the program. Everyting works well now except for the fit in its 'pocket'. I am going to use some close cell foam and make a thick gasket/spacer for seal it up.

Well Dead Link Removed... I took the computer appart, cleaned it very well, and the truck still wont start,I phoned superchip, and chris told me that it is possible that when my truck was in for a recall, that ford updated my ECM,
and did not put the new code # on the ECM housing,he said he had 3 possible updates, that ford could have uploaded into the ECM.
my code on the housing is CDE1(xl2f-12a650-MB),if they updated it to CDE2(xl2f-12a650-MC),if they gave it CDE3(it would end in MD)
CDE4 (would end in ME),if they updated it why would they not tell me or put the new code # on the ECM,I just had to nex day my ECM, and superchip to superchips inc. to have them scan the ECM,to get the new code and replace the chip with the correct one,
Dead Link Removed this is for my '99 sport SOHC,4X4,auto

Bill I also had a problem fitting the computer back in and I called the Jetchip tech support I have the jet and they said you have to break out the little black plastic pieces in the back. Well I did and now it fits fine. Dead Link Removed

It sounds like a lot of you are going through a lot of trouble for the return.

I don't know if anybody is interested, but a lot of the preformance shops are getting chip burners and can actually make you a custom chip to your spec for about $500. I know that is a little pricey, but keep in mind the "pre-cut" chips you buy will only provide maximum results on a stock vehicle, So it you have done other mods you may get a LOT better results from a custom chip. This is especially true if you get into injector upgrades (i.e. with a supercharger) and start having idle surging etc. If you are running diferent tire sizes than stock you would probably benefit from increasing the shift point some.

Just some input from the 5.0 world, and for those of us pushing big boost levels its a necessity to cut custom chips or external CPU "piggybacks" that let you make your own changes from a laptop, but some racing classes don't allow the piggybacks so custom chips makers are popping up everywhere.

In Detroit there is a place called "Alternative automotive" that does them

Cincinnati has a place called "Pauls Automotive" who is very good
Both have Dyno's to help determine what chip will best suit your needs

Good luck!

RonN,
That "electrical grease" is silicone and is NON-conductive, otherwise it would short out the whole connector. It will harden somewhat over time and cause a bad contact if it gets inbetween the contacts and the connector when inserting them together. It is a good idea to clean it off, then reapply some new silicone grease. I use this stuff all the time at work, mostly for power transistors.

Well... I just got my chip back from superchip, they told me before I shipped, that the computer was updated to newer program, that was not the case, what they had to do was add jumpers to the computer to complete the loop.the chip is in and all is fine, however I wish I could get the computer to slide all the way in ,. it appears that ford has put in metal bumps in the back of the firewall, and thats the end of the story, looks like it will be a foam gasket!!
