I swapped from the A4LD to an M5OD in my 93. I had two donors, one was a first gen ex, the other was a 99 Ex Sport. Transmission came from the Sport, all the other stuff came from the 1st Gen.
Things you should buy new (IMO). All things things require you to drop the transmission and are either wear parts of fair semi regularly:
- clutch
- flywheel (make sure you get the flywheel for your model year, not the donor year. Somewhere during the 2ng Gen they changed the bolt pattern on the crank from 6 to 8. you want to make sure your flywheel will bolt up to your crank)
- slave cylinder
Things you'll need from the donor:
- flex plate
- transmission (obviously)
- pedal assembly (includes the clutch safety switch). If I remember you'll need both the clutch and brake pedals
- clutch master cylinder and lines
- starter (auto and manual are different)
Other things to note:
- length of the transmissions are very similar, you shouldn't need new driveshafts
- the first gens already have the wiring harness for the clutch safety switch, all you have to do is plug it in
- It would be convenient if you could find the ECU from the same model year as your truck for a manual, but it's not required. I'm still running my automatic ECU. There's one line that you will have to ground. The other thing is faking out the torque converter lock up and 1-2 shift solenoid lines. you can either put in a resistor (don't recall the ohm value or wattage) or take the solenoid out of your automatic and wire them up somewhere under the hood. If you don;t do this you will get a MIL on the dash.
Don't forget to wire up your reverse lights.
I think that's it. It's not a newbie project, but it's not really that difficult either. There's more than a few threads on here about doing it.
