Swapping in a 4.6 & Auto from a Mustang

Rob- I hope this will help, although I bet ya'ev already been there http://www.therangerstation.com/
I've been keeping up on this cause I'm sure my tranny will go one day(knock on wood) but I'd like to keep my 4.0 w a bbk superchager...should it ever come out....Oh well...If not, then I'm gonna go wild with a v-8 new trans and transfer case....but I hope all goes well, cause one day I'll be there!

Will a Chevy 305 fit in an Explorer?

I see no reason why a chevy 305 wouldn't...I know it could be pretty trick and all...But there would probably be alot of custom mounts for engine trans transfer case ect...I know that I'd prefer a 302 myself even though I think it's cheaper to build a 305...I'm curious..why do ya ask to put in a 305 Kubben?
Thanks
Pete

Gofast,

I know it probably isn't much help being I am in Georgia. If you go to http://www.Iwantaads.com which is a local classifieds, there is a 302 with tranny in there for sale. If my memory serves me correctly it was for sale for like $500. Might be worth spending a few dollars to drive up and get it. Just thought I'd throw it your way incase it helped.

Amigo!

Thanks everyone!

Amigo, Thanks. I found several options in those ads. Yes, I would go and get them for that price. I also went through several ads like that here in the DFW area. I may find one this way. I'll make this work somehow.

Chevy Stuff....

The Chevy stuff would work in my truck but add a whole other set of little problems. I have a T/A with an LS1 motor and love it. I thought about going that route but then it was the whole adapters thing again. I'll just stick with Ford stuff this time around.

If anyone see's a good deal on a 302 & Auto or T5 let me know. This is the biggest hang-up on the project now.

Thanks Rob

Hey, anything is possible. At Hank's 4x4 Jamboree this summer I saw a 95+ Toyota 4Runner fitted with a Corvette LT1 w/trans. Looked pretty trick and it fit well.

Sorry for the off-topic post but on the topic of anything is possible.

This thing had a blown 454 in it.

Rob,

I've researched this topic for a long time now. I was going to put a 5.0 / AOD in my Bro II, however, I have a spare 4.0 and auto from my parts truck. It is more cost effective for me to go this route. The eaisest way to do this is to get a 89-93 Mustang 5.0 AOD donor vehicle. The tranny's were changed in 94 as well as the intakes. This could cause you problems. You'll need the entire car because the little pieces will end up nickle and diming you to death. Now, your problem is finding a wrecked 5.0 mustang. Well, most of them are in Mexico. No Joke! I know several people in the auto salvage industry in Colorado, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, and they have all said these cars are rare in the wrecking yards because they are being bought at auctions and being shipped south of the border. (However, one place in CO that has a few of these is Colorado Mustang - but be prepared to be bent over the counter).

Good luck! I know that there have been a lot of Rangers converted to 5.0's - so this shouldn't be that big of a deal to do a Explorer.

Thats all the info I have on this swap. :) I have checked it out quite a bit just out of curiosity myself. I am sure someday I will be in the same boat and I really don't want to spend any money on a tranny like mine. :)
