I have a 93 w/ the leather sport bucket seats up front, and I was thinking of switching the seats, has anybody done this before? Reason being is the driver seat has lots of wear and the recline lever is broken off, but the passenger seat is like new.

It is possible to switch the seat covers. Take the leather off the drivers and move it over tho the pass, and vise versa. Not everything will match up, meaning there is carpet on the side where the seatbelt is and leather on the door side, but who cares right? Do this every couple of years and you get even wear!!!

thats an interesting idea. i've looked at several ebay auctions for new leather for the explorer seats with the hope of doing this. i'm afraid however that these wouldn't work since i have the sport seats. the seats were really cool when new but now they are a pain.

If you look online you can find companies that make replacement leather covers, they run about $400 a set if I remember right and are made (of course) oversea's. I have never seen a set in person though so dont know about the fit. I have a friend who had his drivers seat re-done, for a perfect match in his 93 EB but it cost him over $700.

The other alternative is to get some seats from a junk yard, later model, in good shape. If you shop around you can find a matching set for around $500 (97 leahter)

I've been thinking about this too for a different reason. My driver seat is too soft, and the passenger seat is nice and firm. I'm pretty sure the seats are the same, you'd just have to exchange the mounts between them (well I would since only one is powered).
But yes, as mentioned, the inboard side of the seat is a different fabric than the outboard side.
