I like Mobil 1 because it's a quality oil, reasonably priced, and easy to find. I will say that Amsoil may be a little better but for me it's just too expensive and too much of a hassle to find. If they had Amsoil at any of my local auto stores I would definitely consider that.
What do you want out of the synthetic oil? Are you interested in extended oil change intervals? Better cold weather performance?
Amsoil SSO 0W-30 is a great synthetic and I use it in my V6 4.0L 2002. But if you are going to be changing the oil out every 5,000 miles per factory oil interval this oil is a waste - it can go at least 15,000 miles and has been run successfully out to 25,000 miles.
A good synthetic for 5,000 mile intervals in the Explorer would be Pennzoil Platinum. It can go longer but if you want to go at least 10,000 I would look into the Amsoil SSO 0W-30 for the V6 or Amsoil ASM 0W-20 for the V8. Mobil 1 also makes an extended drain line, the "Extended Performance" or EP line which has a 5W-30 and a 5W-20 which are good for up to 15,000 miles.
OK Thanks, I didn't realize I could use it to replace 5W20 in the 4.6 as well.
I hope this doesn't classify as hijacking, but, should I get an engine flush done, or run "amsoil engine flush" or a similar product, before switching over to full synthetic? (If it makes a difference, my truck has ~80,000km on it and I've only had it for 2 weeks, so I don't know for sure what was done previously).

Im thinking of using the Mobile 1 on my 4.0. Is it ok to switch to synthetic after 85k miles? And is the Mobile 1 (high mileage) really ok to change only every 10k miles?
Ditto, and use the best filter, for the oil and air. The Amsoil synthetic(all of them) are far better than any OEM oil, in any viscosity, and will test as better under all circumstances. Use their best oil, the Signature Series, for the best performance and protection. It will outperform any OEM oil in any normal vehicle regardless of what the manual/book/bible/mechanic says.
Stop wasting time over thinking viscosity or what some service writer at a dealership tells you(or the book that he quotes from). A lot of people are smarter than he is, and the people who wrote his book. A lot of those people are members of this forum, take our advice for better vehicle life and performance. Regards,
well I just replaced my oil today. I didnt have time to order Amsoil so I just picked up a 5 quart bottle of Mobil 1 5w30 and a PureOne oil filter. So far Im happy with the combo because my engine is running great. Thanks guys for all your suggestions and I will deffinetly try the Amsoil next, maybe even in my Mustang GT as well.
