synthetic oil

I have an 03 4.6L and it calls for a 5W20, not a 5W30. I usualy change oil + filter every 3000 miles, though i have gone 3 times that far when money was tight and the oil looked pretty good that time as well. I use Mobile 1 and a K&N gold oil filter.

A very prudent decision.

I installed bypass system 5 years ago. Take a look at http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126111&highlight=bypass+oil+filter.

With this systyem an excellent oil ( Amsoil ), I am able to do 25k OCIs with excellent results.

I looked at the Amsoil site and did not see a listing for a by-pass, is there another site for those? Let me correct, no listing for the v8.

My ex has 165xxx km's on it , no leaks, i switches to castrol syntec 5w30 and there has been oil coming out around the front main seal. and dripping onto the front crossmember.
im going to switch back to regular oil and see what happens.

i live in a really hot place it ranges from 28 to 45 C and im confused if i still have to use
5w 30

Leaks

The reason you had no leaks before was because the conventional oil was plugging them up, the same way it can plug up oil passages with gunk over time. What happens in older engines is that conventional oil contains waxes and varnishes over seals as it burns which stops bad seals from leaking. You switch to a good synthetic oil with its cleaners and it takes all that gunk off. If the seals are not too damaged contact with new oil will cause them to swell up again, and over time stop the leak. However if seals are very damaged your leak will continue. Again its not the oil causing the leak, its old damaged seals. If the leaks do not stop with in 3 to 5 k miles you should repair the bad seal. Switching back to a conventional oil to resolve the problem is not the answer and will most likely not fix the leak. You would need to wait for the varnish and sludge coating to build back up in the engine before the leak will stop. So your trading engine life for a oil drip. With that many miles, I would stick to a full synthetic oil and change it every 4K. Your engine and wallet will thank you in the end.
