Hi everyone, i just purchased a 97 explorer 4x4 and well, here goes..
when i get about to 30 mph, it seems as right when it shifts into 3rd gear, i start hearing a whine like a fire truck. from then on the whine only follows the wheel speed, no further gear shifting changes it. if i get it going into a whine and i throw it in neutral, then shut the truck off, it will whine down until i stop. although, if i manualy go from drive to 2nd on the shifter, it will go away. the 4 wheel drive has no impact on the noise. i changed the differential fluid, the tranny fluid, and t-case fluid. no help. so i know its something that needs repair. i just cant pin point it! any help is GREATLY appreciated. i took it to a fellow that knows a little about trannys and he thinks it might be the O.D planitery gear set. before i rush to get one and a tanny tear down manual, i realy want to be sure its not the t-case, or maby even something else. thanks a million!
