I drive a 98' ploder and im thinking i messed it up hardcore.

So, this is what happens:

My car WHINES, not squeals or anything, Above 35 MPH when i am DECELERATING. Like when my foot aint on the Gas is the only time it happens. But it takes this a few minutes to happen. Sometimes people look at me like im a total retard so ill give you a scenario.

I turn on my car, everything is fine, it reveses fine, it accelerates fine, no weird noises. I drive out of the parking lot driving to my favorite smoke spot at about 45 MPH to keep the bacon off my ass. Hah. So im comming up at about halfway or 2.5 miles from the lot and this light is up ahead. Oh no, I should slow down as to not run the red light. I take my foot off the accelerator and WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE.. the higher the speed/rpm the higher the whine. When i put my foot on the accelerator, the sound goes away. Whenever i dont have my foot on the gas, it makes this noise.

The noise dwindles down as my speed slows down. The sound usually dies away at like 30 or 35 mph. All the fluids check out and eeverything.

So i take it to the dealer. They're like your transfer case is shot or something. Your clutch(????????) in the transfercase is falling apart and we can hear noises from it or something.

I am a 100% uber newbie to cars and i really only know how to change my oil and like put flids in, and change a tire. So i called my grandpa and hes like Just DROP the 4x4 and run it in 2wd forever. I really dont use 4x4 that much, only once in the year i've had it to be honest. No lift/tires = no clearance = no big 4x4 = no need for 4x4..

Any suggestions? Can anyone explain to me whats going on? Is it a good idea to drop 4x4? Is something messed up with my Tranny? Help :) Please :)

If it is your transfer case, which they do go out a lot if you have the 4405, they're all over eBay for about $250. Buy one, call up a smoking buddy who is good with cars and have him throw it in. Converting to 2WD will end up costing you way more than a new transfer case would.

Also, is replacing a T-Case labour intensive? like alot of money labour intensive? like 2.3 grand at the ford dealership intensive? :)

Replacing the transfer case takes about an hour. I wouldn't have the Dealership it. It's not all that hard. Just take off the skid plate, remove the rear driveshaft from the transfer case, unhook the wiring harnesses, place a jack underneath the tcase, unbolt the four bolts, slide it back a little, it falls onto the jack, lower jack. Reverse for install. :D

Just a thought, but if you have control trac (your dash switch has auto, 4wd high and 4wd low) then you could try disabling 4wd by doing the brown wire mod. Try this thread:

The brown wire supplies power to the transfer case which in turn pulses power to the front wheels. By cutting power to the tranfer case you'd be essentially in full time 2wd. However the front drive shaft will still spin when the truck is in motion. It's just that with the brown wire cut you wouldn't be suppling power to the front wheels via the transfer case.

I'm no expert and I'm not sure it will solve your problem since you indicate it occurs on deceleration only. I would think that if the transfer case was shot you'd probably hear a whine on acceleration as well. Might be worth a shot though.

guess not! So its the transfer case for sure?

no ur not sure that its the transfer case.. my transmission whined before i swapped it out.. it never died on me but it did whine, so i was like NOPE! got a cool glass of lemonade and swapped it out it had a chance to die.

Try this, it should be making a whine in drive and reverse, out of gear or park should be quiet. If this is the case along with what you posted you might have a fin in the torque conveter bent/broken causing the transmission fluid to swirl around in the converter creating a high pitch whine. I have seen this several times.

Did a little more home work on this, turns out that the space plate between the valve body has one hole too small in size. That is creating a high pitch whine as the fluid travels through it. Ford has a corrective plate with the corrct hole diameter.
