Here's the deal i went 4wheeling today and sunk my truck in the water. I got a nice amount of water in my interior. Anyway my problem is I was trying to pull someone out of the water when this rather scary popping noise came from my truck. After some investigation we think its my transfer case. It seems like the chain is slipping on the gear or the gear is spinning on the splines. Its hard to get it in and out of 4wheel low and when it comes out it makes a rather loud clunking (more so than usual.) after this i decided to call it a day and i was driving back out to the road when i got stuck in a minor mud hole that i had to go through to get out. I got stuck in the hole so i put it in 4wheel low and when i tried to move it did the same thing with out alot of load on the truck. I think i could have gotten water in the t-case and if so would that cause the transfer case to slip? Im afriad im gonna have to rebuilt the t-case.

do you have auto hubs?

I got a used one a couple a months ago for $150. I have heard that clunking noise and eventually the t-case locked up and snapped the output shaft. Luckily there was no damage to the tranny.

If you have too much fluid, be it water or hyd. fluid it will not engage. When I changed my transfer fluid, I put in too much fluid, because the rear of the vehicle was on jack stands and the proper amount can only be measured when the vehicle is level. That is easy to check just pull the fill plug on the case and see how much is in there.

I do have auto hubs But ive never really heard of them having a problem on the 2nd gens. I Dont even think you can put manual hubs on a truck like mine. There might be water in the tcase i was in the water pretty good. I however do have extended breathers so i dont see how water could get in there.

Well I drained my t-case and my transmision and found water in both. I drained them and added new fluid i hoped it would stop the popping but its still doing it. :( Im pretty sure its the chain slipping i think im gonna have to rebuild the t-case. Any one know how much one of those kits cost?
