Hey everyone, i did a search looking for my problem, with no luck finding it. My problem is the tachometer sits at 0. Even when driving down the road it still sits at 0. Sometimes it will work and come up to where it needs to be then maybe 5-10 minutes later it goes back to 0. Any ideas? Another question is how many bulbs are in the instrument panel? I noticed on the speedometer, 50 and 60 on it are black yet the rest of it is lit? any help would be appreciated! thanks.

I have the same issue with my '99 Explorer XLT. Did you ever find a solution? I have a friend who works for Ford who suspects it's an electrical issue.

Any ideas?

No luck yet. Im still trying to fix my msifire problem at the moment. Seems like the coil pack is ready to go out. Hopefully after i fix that problem ill get into the dash and take a look at it.

There is a signal wire that in the big square engine loom 42 pin connector on the top of the engine/rocker cover... The wire is tan/yellow. I would check voltage on that wire to see if you are getting any when the engine is on.

Rwenzing says that the tach signal is generated by the PCM solely for the tachometer and trip computer, so it is likely to be digital. It has nothing to do with the coil pack which has its own independent ground triggers from the PCM.
If you have to go to the ECM... it is pin 48 of the 104 pin connector and is a White/Pink or White/LtGreen. This is also a tach signal.

Another question is how many bulbs are in the instrument panel? I noticed on the speedometer, 50 and 60 on it are black yet the rest of it is lit? any help would be appreciated! thanks.

Oh, and change ALL the bulbs at the same time because more than likely after you go through the pain of changing one of them, another will blow shortly thereafter

Thanks for the help. and sry i didnt clarify about the coil pack problem. i was saying that ive been having trouble with a misfire. Cylinder 3 and 6. Brand new plugs and wires. No misfire for a little bit. Then started back up. Made sure there was no short. made sure all plugs were tight on the coil pack. Still misfire. Pulled the plug on the side of the coil pack looked clean put it back on and seemed to make a better connection. But started back up with the misfire. So ive come to the conclusion i need a new coil pack.

Did that help at all? Do you still have a problem?

So the tach is or is not related to the coilpack? I have the same problem and haven't found any results that work.
