My Explorer had a problem when trying to open my tailgate. sometimes it would open and a lot of times not, so I started to investigate this problem, after finding a post here on trying to get the tailgate open, which was great advice, I used that method. Well after locking and unlocking dozens of times and further reading etc, it was thought that it was the Power Door Actuator. So after timeless times of looking at the mechanism, trying to figure out why it was not working, it seemed that the rod from the actuator was not pushing the actual pin, down far enough to unlock and open the door. So I thought, ok, I need a new actuator, right? well I go and look for them here online and even watched a great video provided by 1-Aauto, link as follows
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XSK6rIdWTM
so I thought ok I can do this, I ordered the actuator from amazon.com as it was a bit cheaper but supposedly still reliable aswell, so I wait for the part, in the meantime I took the tailgate apart so I could still atleast get the damn door open when I need to,via opening up the window, with panels off to push the rods more to open. so today I installed the new actuator. well, you have to becareful when connecting the rods back into place and take your time. had a problem with 1 of the rods but managed with determination. so I thought ok great now lets see if it works, I shut the door, go the drivers side and locked it, came back to open and nothing, ok cool, now lets unlock it, came back and still nothing, I was ok wtf man. what is the problem now? So at this point I cant get the damn door open at all, so there I go, inside the truck, lower the seats down to get back there. well apparently it was not the actuator, the small round pin that drops down to activate the lock doesn't drop down far enough, I checked all the rods making sure the clips are securely clipped back in correctly etc, after further examination, everything looks correct, even came back in the house to watch the video again thinking I missed something. well nada. the damn thing will not open till I take a screw driver and force/push that round pin down to open the door. so, now Im right back where I started from. what can be the problem? I even used some synthetic, silicone spray onto the mechanism to help free whatever was holding it back, no luck. so before I buy anything else, does anybody know what the problem can possibly be?. something is not engauging the lock mechanism, I looked at the springs etc and it all looks fine.I was finally able to open the door but using a screw driver to push that round steel pin down . Has anyone run into this problem?? I would greatly appreciate any advice on this folks. midwest2006@sbcglobal.net. Im Christopher,Illinois,USA

Power Actuator

Solved the problem.. it was not the actuator at all. it was the rod connecting to the lock mechanism that had mysteriously unthreaded itself from the threaded clip. How it did that is beyond me, so I twirled it back in and tried it, not enough screwed it more and omg it worked. so I bought a new actuator for nothing. ill have it just in case the now new one fails. But nothing ventured, nothing gained. I did learn a lot about this project. now I am going to use some rustoleum rust converter and rustoleum undercoating to all the inside panels of all the doors and underneath on the frame, wheel wells and as much as I can under the body to help protect it like it should have been when the original owners bought it brand new. Anyway I just want to thank you all for reading about my problem. Thanks Folks...

Thanks for sharing your experience, I have a 2000 sport and I'll try to install an actuator for both the tailgate and the rear door, the first to open the tailgate and the second one to lock/unlock the door without the need of a key.
