Since you have a '96 I assume you want reversal....98 and up lights / hatch on your 96...that WILL work... some misc convers needed with it ...see here:

Rear LiftGate on Gen 1 Mounteer and Gen 2 Explorer the Same?
I have a liftgate issue. It wont close or latch. Someone at one point either broke in or locked there keys in the car and ****ed the back hatch where its crocked now. I have tried fixing it for hours with nothing coming close. Was planning on going to the local junk yard and getting a liftgate...

Currently in the process of replacing my rear quarters. The only available quarters are for first gen. So I'll be looking for 1st gen to 2nd gen conversion.
