late shift or shift flare?

Is this a new occurrence or has it been like this for weeks or even months?

Does the transmission wait before engaging after selecting Drive or Reverse?

Does the transmission wait until the engine speed is excessively high before shifting? If so, does it do it for all upshifts or just certain gears?

Does the engine rev between gears when upshifting? If so, for all upshifts or just certain gears?

Does the symptom get worse after the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is warmed up after driving for 20 minutes?

Does the ATF register normal on the dipstick after engine is warmed up and idling?

How many miles has it been since the ATF fluid and filter were changed?

How many miles on the vehicle?

Does the O/D light flash?

Is the check engine light On? If so, what are the diagnostic trouble codes?

The computer controls the shift points on the auto transmission.

The cheapest place to start is to disconnect the battery for a 1/2 an hour, hook it back up, and take your Ex out for a drive and see if that helps ;-)

If that helps - great.

If it doesn't help, start with the cheapest things like changing the auto trans fluid and filter.

Could be a faulty speed sensor. If the computer does not know the ground speed of the car it does not know when to tell the transmission to shift.

Could be something else but thats a cheap place to start.

like 6 or7 months ago. yes, the trans wait after engaging when i shift into drive or reverse. no, the acceleration is perfect. no, the symptom is the same always. like 3k miles. the explorer have 99k miles. the O/D light doesn't flash. the check engine light is off.
