Tapping noise

I have a 02 explorer with about 92,000 miles on it. When I start it up in the morning, I usually hear a slight tapping noise that lasts until the engine warms up. I recently had an oil change, and noticed that the mechanics put 10w-30 in, instead of 5w-30. Could this be causing the tapping noise, or is it normal.

Could be the oil. 10 is a little thicker and may take a tad longer to get pumping to the top of the engine. What type of Oil filter was used? Some don't have check valves and this allows oil to flow back into the filter from the top of the engine.

I am not sure which filter was used. It is the basic one that comes with the Wal-mart oil change, so it probably does not have a check valve. Do you think putting one in with a check valve would make a difference?

I bet it's just the oil. I know with thicker oil and cold temps the lifters click for a longer time until the oil has filled them all. I've got a 1994 4.0L OHV and I usually run 10w30, and yes if you let us know what engine you have that may help a lot

The engine is a SHOC 4.0 V6.

With the SOHC 4.0, the problem could be either the Camshaft Tensioner or Timing Chain Cassettes, but the known problems with those should have been fixed with updated parts by 2002.

I have already done 2 sets of chain tensioners on 03's... seems like they can't figure out the problem permanently...
