Hello all,

Could someone tell me how much (or where to find the info) HP/Torque the 2002-2003 Explorer need to reach 5.5 sec 0-60 times? Is this feasible? There should be some kind of "average" formula to use?

Thanks,
Stephane

You'd probably need at least 400 hp. Just a guesstimate.

Getting more horsepower will change the weight of the vehicle, and thus will change the acceleration rate. 5 1/2 seconds could probably be done with a supercharger setup combined with a tuned motor and a good intake/exhaust system. Maybe a Kenne Belle twin-screw will fit on the modular 4.6 Explorer. That will get you going quickly. ;)

Thanks for the replies. I read a few weekes back that the Kenne Bell will only bring the acceleration to 7.9. Other SC will do about the same. When you talk about a tuned engine, you mean pistons, bore etc? Did anybody on this forum modify his 2002 + Ex to achieve that kind of acceleration?

Thanks again,
Stephane

Since the block is the same as the Mustang 4.6, you can use many of those parts. As you've already found out, making a 5000+ lb SUV haul ass is hard. You'll need to do more than just bolt on a supercharger.

For the gains needed, I'd look into a centrifugal s/c with an intercooler instead of a roots or screw type. Then with a worked block you can turn up the boost easier.

It is possible, but it all depends on the $$$ you want to spend.

What's wrong with a twin screw? I don't know much about the Centrifugal (Vortech, right?) chargers, but the Kenne Bells are very nice. How fast is a V-8 X stock? Geez, I would hope it's not above 8. My stock V-6 runs 8 seconds.

By tuned engine, I mean one with a chip. A built engine would be heads/cam and all of that pizazz.

It would need to be "built".

Centrifugal superchargers are much easier to tune to higher boost levels and are much more thermally efficient with a good intercooler.

I'm all for roots and screw s/c's, but centrifugals are better for building crazier levels of power.

How does it work? Is the Vortech the s/c that looks like a turbo blower?

Yes.

A centrifugal s/c is a snail just like a turbo. However, instead of exhaust gases driving the compressor, a pulley does.
