terrible gas milage

no i didnt test anything as im not getting any codes etc.....maybe il do plugs/wires and see what happens...i just hate to spend $$ and not get any results......oil is changed every 3000-3500 miles(when i forget or dont have time to change at 3k)...tire pressure is what is stamped on the door sticker..use CC everyday..set it @ 70 mph..dunno when th eplugs were done last..i bought the truck w/59k on it now i have 85k...front brakes are new(er)..havent done the rears yet(soon)

thanks alot

Well i think i found your problem. On the stickers of almost all ford vehicles they put in a recommended tire pressure of 26 psi:eek: . Thats stupid. Ford realized this mistake as well and changed the numbers as well as put stickers over the vehciles that were already sold when they went to the dealers for repairs. Pump your tires to 40 psi. It makes a difference trust me. When i was stock and ran 40 psi, i avereged 23 mpg only on the highway. Before i was gettin 18 and ran at 30 psi.

The plugs may or may not have been done, it would really depend on the owner but either way if the were done at 50k then you have another 35k on them already, if not (which i strongly suspect is the case) then you have 85k on a set of plugs. Too bad ford didn't stick some iridium plugs in there or else you'd be right on time to replace em lol.

think my sticker says 30 or 32 psi...def not 26..LOL....IMo 40 is too much and will result in a bumpy/rough ride

i highly doubt i have 85k on the original set of plugs..lol..the 1 we looked at was in tooo good of shape to have that many miles on em..ive seen worse(junk) with 100 miles on them:eek:

Even 30 is way too low.

IMo 40 is too much and will result in a bumpy/rough ride

I have run 40psig for years with no ride problem nor any wear problem.

ill try 40 and see what happens....

thanks

i would not go with the k&n,i have heard the added airflow will mess with the computer .it will see more air and maybe even try to add more fuel to compensate for the added incoming air .you dont want that.and i also hear the mass airflow reader will get gummed up faster from the oil coming off that k&n.also someone mentioned a thermostat change .thats fine but stay with the factory reccomended heat range on that .anything lower or higher will again confuse the computer.your already getting better gas milage than most .gonna have to grin n bear it.gotta pay to play ...i always tell everyone...love the truck ,hate the gas milage

That is simply not true.

and i also hear the mass airflow reader will get gummed up faster from the oil coming off that k&n

That can be true with over oiling, not with proper oiling.

00 ohv

i get 22 hwy with my ohv but my city sits around 15 i get about 300 a tank with all city" will 26 fubar you that much cuz i just bought mine a couple months ago and i sit at 26-27 should i go to 40 with stocks 2000 xlt?

Before you go replacing things, check your spark plugs. Take them ALL out and lay them down next to each other, shining a bright light on the ends. The electrodes should have a light brownish burn pattern on them, and all the plugs should be virtually identical in color/burn pattern. Any strong variation in color will indicate a problem.

This may sound dumb but if the max psi on the tire is 35 are you guys still putting 40 in there?

well i have had tires on other cars and when the tires get warn down i have had tire guys tell me to run them at 40 to get more life out of them when the sides were down a bit and they are rated for 32 so i know it wont hurt your tires when i got mien 26 sounded waaaay low and it even looked low looking at it i pumped them to 40 today and the ride seemed to get better not worse more responsive as well not to worried about it cuz i am going to 31' mickeys in about a month and they reccomend waaayyyy more than 26

You may just be chasing a non-problem.

I mean………the way you're doing your est., based on miles per tank fill, may be at fault.

Note: You said that currently:
lucky if i see 300 miles on a full tank in my 2000 eddie bauer 6 banger

Then, you said
i used to get like 325-350 on a full tank..now i dont.…

So, for some that would mean a difference of only about 1-2 gals……so, think technique…….I mean, ”How many times have you squeezed in that extra gallon in?” Or, as others have mentioned city vs. combined vs. pure highway………and, driving style………did anyone mention “winter gas?”
_______________________________________________________________

So, IF a wrong assumption was made, about your technique………I apologize.

_______________________________________________________________

Anyway, your method may be somewhat sound. Though, I’d like to see actual MPG numbers over a period of time.

Cause, I‘ve found that guys who report “high gas usage” based on how many miles they travel on a “tank full”……….is somewhat suspect.

Example………..sometimes (pure highway) I’ll get close to 380 miles on a tank full and sometimes I can barely squeak 330 miles before I get scared that I’ll run out. So, at what point did I get afraid?? When the gauge read ¼ tank or was it a hair over that ¼ tank mark?? See what I mean??? Then, the next time I fill up……. I’ll be right on again. Not to mention..……sometimes the gas attendant (in OR you can’t fill your own) will really squeeze in that extra gas……and sometimes they don’t.

Aloha, Mark

PS......look at all the different MPG figures reported by different guys from across the country (note: they gave MPG figures).....and, the tire pressue issue......and, "mods" for the most part weren't even mentioned......there is alot to think about. Do the tune up----Good luck
