I had the fortune of finding a good 6.5" factory sub, and put it in the car.

The problem is, its not working :(

Im just wondering if the amp is fried, the previous owner, who is a friend of mine said that he took out the stock sub when he noticed it smoking.

Through searching i found this tidbit: "BEFORE you go about removing the subwoofer from its enclosure, though, disconnect the positive lead wire from the battery, so as to greatly reduce the likelihood of a short circuit occurring and frying the sub amp while removing the subwoofer"

Im sure that my friend had done none of that, so im wondering if the stock amp is done, but i just wanted to know if there was anyway to test it. Im guessing put a multimeter on the leads to the sub to see if theres power?

If the amp is external, you can test the subwooger by running a 1.5 VDC battery across the positive and negative speaker wires. (Listen for a crackle sound)

If the sub is good then you have a problem with the amp.

Thank you

Ill try this tomorrow

I probably should have stated that this is a 100% stock 1997 JBL system

I'd rather test the sub with a multimeter...even a partially blown sub will move from the battery test

^^^ true. if the sub gives any feedback from a multimeter it will works.
