The Build: Explorer Carputer Version 1

As far as the screen goes, there isn't much to it -- Liliput makes a 7" screen that fits into a double-DIN opening, which uses a DB-15 cable for video, and passes screen presses to the computer via USB. Just install a set of drivers, and it works.

Well, it sounds then like the screen is not an issue. I would still stand by using a modified laptop rather than a desktop motherboard. The DC power supply, low power consumption, built in battery backup, and small physical size makes it perfect.

one thing to remember that while most laptops/tablet pc's have DC inputs they are typically 18-24volts roughly (mine is 19.5) some circuitry is sensitive and would need a further dc-dc converter.

also the motherboard and psu are totally separate components. carputers are nothing more than mini-itx or nano-itx motherboards with dc power supply's. if you've built your own desktop before than this is nothing too difficult.

for mobile computer psu's do a google search for 'dc dc psu' you'll find several stores which specialize in selling fully built carputers and also in selling you all the components you need to create/build your own custom one.

you can even choose what operating system you want to install, from windows xp to linux

Hah, it's awsome to see this thread taking off like it has :D I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while, but I've been involved in moving to AZ from PA and it's been a *****. It seems my Explorer is having some issues, too. You can read about them here: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1734777#post1734777

As soon as I can, though, I'm unpacking the carputer and resuming work on it :D
